Wounds Are Where Light Enters By Walter Wangerin Jr. Review

Many know the acclaimed author Walter Wangerin Jr., the storyteller who gave us the national bestseller The Book of the Dun Cow.

In Wounds Are Where Light Enters, you’ll see how God’s love breaks into our lonely moments in unexplainable ways. Wangerin tells the stories of memorable characters facing the same struggles we all face as we try to trust in God’s faithfulness.

Wounds Are Where Light Enters is a collection of stories that are warm, sometimes funny, sometimes not, but always taking unexpected turns to find the care of God in all the pathways of life. In them we find the grace that enables us to live with the answers we see and the answers we don’t see. In this collection we meet Arthur Bias, the retired black police officer who loves those who hate; Agnes Brill, the shrill piano teacher of patience; Junie Piper, precious of the homeless; Melvin, who honors his aging mother by honoring the little girl she has become; Lucian, the lover of thieves; and Blue Jack, the hammer of God.

Readers will discover in these stories a powerful display of God’s working in the lives of all of us. They’ll find a place where he works even in the dark, even in the struggles, even in the wounds. This is the place where God’s light enters.

Cassandra's Review-  The book, one box of tissues and a cozy spot to read and time is all you will need to enjoy this wonderful book about strength and God's love.  The author chose great stories to get his feelings across and even if you just read a few at a time they will bless and stay near to your mind all day.

After her husband, Jack, dies in a climbing incident, Shauna has only her five-year-old son and her helicopter charter business to live for. Every day is a struggle to make ends meet and she lives in constant fear of losing even more than she already has.

When her business partner is murdered, his final words convince Shauna that she’s in danger too. But where can she turn? Zach Bannister was her husband’s best friend and is the person she blames for his death. She’s barely spoken to him since. But right now he seems her only hope for protecting her son.

Zach is only too happy to assuage his guilt over Jack’s death by helping Shauna any way he can. But there are secrets involved dating back to Shauna’s childhood that more than one person would prefer to stay hidden.

In The View from Rainshadow Bay, suspense, danger, and a longing to love again ignite amid the gorgeous lavender fields of Washington State.

Cassandra's review- The book has a molasses quality as it is super slow flow and sticks to your mind.  While I found the writing to be easy to get into, it just did not have the grace of a good character or the speed of a good mystery.   I was in a hurry to finish this and not because it was the best.  If I was not reviewing it, I would have put it down middle way through.   Other books by this author are much better, so maybe the work is just spread too thin.

“Running from the Heart is an authentic and real picture of what it looks like to follow Jesus. Rebecca's beautiful life and walk with Christ will inspire you to run after God with faith and perseverance. The book shares how Rebecca overcame pain, suffering, struggles, and trials in her life through her faith in God. This is a great gift for any young person seeking after the Lord and longing to live for something that will last forever. It is a book that is a blessing as an individual devotion and in group discussions in small groups as well.

I can't wait for my two young daughters to read this powerful book that I know will have a huge impact on their faith walk with God. Rebecca lived liked Jesus and I hope that one day my girls choose to follow Jesus and grow up to become a Rebecca to this lost and hurting world. Check-out other incredible resources through the Awakening to God Ministry website that will bring you Hope and give you a new eternal perspective in the midst of your own pain and suffering.”  Julie Davies, GA

“Running from the Heart”(published by Xlibris) was birthed from the broken heart of Jeannie Long. Long’s heart was first broken when her 17-year-old son, Alex, committed suicide, following cyber-bullying and drug taking. Unbelievably, eight years later, her daughter, Rebecca, drowned in a terrible accident in Lake Michigan. Unable to go on, Long decided to end her life. At the last moment, the presence of God filled the room and she was transformed in a divine encounter.

Discovering Rebecca’s journals and encouraged by hundreds of messages, Long was moved to share the legacy of her daughter’s courageous and triumphant life. “Running from the Heart” is a unique devotional based on the last eight years of Rebecca’s life told through her journal entries, with messages from the broken heart of her mother. Dealing with matters of the heart, Rebecca transferred what she learned as a champion athlete to her journey through life.

She wrote: “What I learned as an athlete prepared me for such a time as this.” “Women (and people in general) are facing unprecedented challenges to live full and abundant lives.  Depression, suicide and addiction are all on the rise and, possibly more than anything else, they are looking for authentic and honest guidance to help them navigate through the struggles and challenges they are facing.” Through the example of girl, who had the world at her feet and yet still chose to follow God's plan for her life, the author’s hope and prayer is that “Running from the Heart” will encourage women to stay strong to what is true and right, whatever pressure, struggles or challenges they may face.

Cassandra's Review-  A great thick and rich taste.  Each little bite is perfect for a small snack.  Of course with all of my kids only having 12 in a box is not really enough for more than one snacktime, but they are really good.
