God's Great Love for You
by Rick Warren, Chris Saunders

God’s Great Love

Created the entire universe

And everything in it

Including you.

God’s Great Love for You, written by #1 New York Times bestselling author and respected pastor Rick Warren, takes children on a whimsical and heartfelt journey that lets them know God’s love is with them wherever they go. With breathtaking illustrations by Chris Saunders, the simple yet poignant text comes alive as a child journeys to places far and near and discovers God’s great love is perfect, and everywhere, and will never end.

Cassandra's Review-  Very short and super easy for younger readers to enjoy either by themselves or with you reading out loud.   The illustrations to me are what make this book a story, because if it was just the wording it would be easily written on one page.  I do not really see any imagination by this author, but it is a clean and cute book for kids.

'Twas The Evening Of Christmas
By Glenys Nellist , Elena Selivanova

’Twas the evening of Christmas, when all through the town,

Every inn was so crowded, no room could be found.

Tired Mary and Joseph, who went door to door,

At last found a place on a small stable floor.

For over 200 years, families have gathered on Christmas Eve to hear the much loved words of Dr. Clement C. Moore’s ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. This year, families can gather together to share the real Christmas story––the story of Jesus’ birth. ’Twas the Evening of Christmas echoes the familiar language and rhythm of Dr. Clements’ poetry, but instead of focusing on Santa, it focuses on the baby Jesus, who is, after all, the true hero of Christmas. All families will delight in this simple retelling of the most famous story ever told. With a cover that comes alive with foil and sculpted embossing, this book is sure to become a Christmas classic.

Cassandra's Review- Perfect for a new traditional read out loud book for your little ones to dream about.

True Identity by John C Majors Review

True Identity: Finding Significance and Freedom Through Who You Are in Christ
by John C Majors

Teens' Guide to Identity from FamilyLife

All teens wrestle with the question "Who am I?" and wonder, What makes me special?
Though these questions linger for life, they are most intense in the teen years, where confusion, awkwardness, and a desperate grab for identity reign. So how does a young person answer these critical questions? Where do young men and women find their significance, worth, and value?

True Identity is perfect for parents and youth workers to give to the teenagers (14-16) in their lives to help them in their journey. Drawing on experiences and wisdom from a wide array of experts, the book provides compassionate answers to help teens discover who they really are, emphasizing their identity in Christ above all other ways our culture defines them. As the book walks teens through the steps to make their faith their own, it highlights healthy independence and God-honoring relationships.

The Passport2Identity curriculum launched in April 2016, and True Identity is its trade book companion.

I received a complimentary copy.

Cassandra's Review- As a mom, I want to give my kids all the options they could want or need in life, and this book helps in a more faith based way to keep them thinking and discussing the topic of finding themselves.   While some parents might view this as a path through God, because it is, others might not approve.  It really depends on what you want to bring to your teens.

Gravitas Ventures has announced the DVD and Blu-Ray release of GLAAD Award-winner Del Shore’s A VERY SORDID WEDDING, a continuation of Shores 2000 feature film Sordid Lives.  The energetic cast includes Bonnie Bedelia (“Parenthood”), Leslie Jordan (“American Horror Story”), Caroline Rhea (“Sabrina, The Teenage Witch), Dale Dickey (Hell or High Water), Emerson Collins (Southern Baptist Sissies), Ann Walker (“Child of the 70s”), Katherine Bailess (“Hit the Floor”), Alec Mapa (“Devious Maids”), Aleks Paunovic (War for the Planet of the Apes) Levi Kreis (2010 Tony Award®, “Best Featured Actor in a Musical,” Million Dollar Quartet) and Academy Award® winner Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost, “The View”).

17 years after family matriarch Peggy tripped over G.W.’s wooden legs in Sordid Lives, same-sex marriage equality has barreled into Winters, Texas and not everyone is ready to accept it. An anniversary memorial service is being planned in honor of Peggy at the bar while the Southside Baptist Church plans an "Anti-Equality" rally to protest the abomination of gay marriage and work to defend their religious freedom. The beloved cast of colorful characters are all on a collision course for shenanigans and fireworks on the big night. Along the way a bisexual serial killer shows up, a drag queen country medley is performed and a beauty-salon-versus-the-bigots battle turns getting your hair done into the front lines of the equality battle.  Friendships are tested and families are reunited as fear and bigotry are confronted with acceptance and understanding on the way to a surprise wedding with (almost) everyone in attendance.

Sordid Lives was a massive hit among LGBT audiences and spawned a 12-episode TV series in 2008 — stars such as Bedelia, Olivia Newton-John Delta Burke and Rue McClanahan appeared.

Shores wrote, directed and produced A Very Sordid Wedding. Emerson Collins also produced. Louise Beard (Show Yourself), Jeff Beesley (Nomis) and Phyllis Laing (Heaven is For Real) are the Executive Producers.

Cassandra's Review-  FIlled with controversial material and scenes that younger eyes should not see, this movie is laced with humor, strength and is a sequel.  Even though I found myself cringing at some point this movie was well casted and the humor is evident.  I need to say that I recommend this only to adults and it is not faith based in any way.

But then the other letters learn that the Hanukkah story wouldn't be complete without the Gimels! Is it too late for the missing letters to be found?

Cassandra's Review-  The reader needs to know that this is strongly faith based and if they do not believe in God or Jesus, this is not going to be a believable read.  While I personally think that keeping an open mind to all things is a good choice and following your heart and own beliefs, not what society gives you, is a great way to live.  The book is written by the author but interpreted ad from Jesus in a devotional way.

Fire Road by Kim Phuc Phan Thi Review

Fire Road: The Napalm Girl's Journey Through the Horrors of War to Faith, Forgiveness, and Peace
by Kim Phuc Phan Thi, Ashley Wiersma

Get out! Run! We must leave this place! They are going to destroy this whole place! Go, children, run first! Go now!

These were the final shouts nine year-old Kim Phuc heard before her world dissolved into flames--before napalm bombs fell from the sky, burning away her clothing and searing deep into her skin. It's a moment forever captured, an iconic image that has come to define the horror and violence of the Vietnam War. Kim was left for dead in a morgue; no one expected her to survive the attack. Napalm meant fire, and fire meant death.

Against all odds, Kim lived--but her journey toward healing was only beginning. When the napalm bombs dropped, everything Kim knew and relied on exploded along with them: her home, her country's freedom, her childhood innocence and happiness. The coming years would be marked by excruciating treatments for her burns and unrelenting physical pain throughout her body, which were constant reminders of that terrible day. Kim survived the pain of her body ablaze, but how could she possibly survive the pain of her devastated soul?

Fire Road is the true story of how she found the answer in a God who suffered Himself; a Savior who truly understood and cared about the depths of her pain. Fire Road is a story of horror and hope, a harrowing tale of a life changed in an instant--and the power and resilience that can only be found in the power of God's mercy and love

Cassandra's Review Q&A

- What did you like about the book and why?  The realness, the honesty, the truth in the story.  I felt each moment and think that people are so cruel to do horrors like this to others, but the sad truth is that life will not change in war times.

- What did you not like about the book and why?  It is sad, it is hard to read through because of the struggles and pure evil that is included.  It is not something that you can read and enjoy or really that anyone should.

- What did you learn?  The author's strength is overwhelming and will give courage through the pain of this true tale.

- To whom would you recommend this book and why?  Wow, this is a tough question because some people could have actually been there, others could trigger PTSD from some similar effect of war.  I would recommend this to someone who can take the brutalness of the war descriptions and the pain of the author, and turn it into a positive learning experience.

I'd Like You More If You Were More Like Me by John Ortberg Review

I'd Like You More If You Were More Like Me: Getting Real about Getting Close
by John Ortberg

I'd Like You More if You Were More like Me takes on one of life's most important questions: How can I get closer to God and other people?

We were created for deep connections. When people have deep connections, says John Ortberg, they win in life. When they don't have deep connections, they cannot win in life. I'd Like You More if You Were More like Me offers help in overcoming one of the biggest obstacles to making deep connections: the fact that we're so different. Different from God and different from each other.

The good news is that connectedness is not based on similarity, but on shared experiences. When one person invites another to share an experience, they're connected. It can be sharing a beautiful sunset or a meal, having a great conversation over cup of coffee, going for walk, or even teasing somebody. And when we share those same experiences with God, we get closer to him, too. God wants to connect with us--so much that he sent his son to live as a human being. God took on flesh and shared every human experience. So we don't have to wonder what a close relationship with God looks like anymore.

An intimate relationship with God and other people doesn't have to be a cliche, it can be a daily way of life.

Cassandra's Review Q&A

- What did you like about the book and why? It is honest and open which helps to express the author's beliefs.

- What did you not like about the book and why?  I feel like it is centered around God in an way that may be offputting to non believers, but at the same time that is a very positive part of the book.

- What did you learn?  The author really values God and wants his readers to find a connection within themselves as well as with each other.,

- To whom would you recommend this book and why?  I would say older adults because children do not really get this type of connecting as much and this book while could be discussed with younger ages, might not have such an impact as it would with older ages that may have or currently be living in the situations.
