Mean Dads for a Better America by Tom Shillue Review

32051586
From the stand-up comedian and popular host on the Fox News Network, a nostalgic look back at his childhood and the simple American values that shaped his worldview—a portrait of growing up in 1970s America.

As a comedian and conservative thinker, whip-smart funny Tom Shillue grounds his ideas about our current culture and political climate in stories from his childhood. Growing up as one of five kids in a devout Irish Catholic family in a small town outside of Boston, Tom sincerely believes that the rough-and-tumble, rules-dominated world in which he came of age was a better America—a time and place that made him into the well-adjusted, happy, successful man he is today.

In Mean Dads for a Better America, Tom reminisces about his childhood, his family, and the traditional values he cherishes. He takes us back to a time when neighbors disciplined each other’s children without fear of being sued, when kids made it to the family table for dinner, when parents’ rules were gospel, when the occasional fistfight was considered a fair way to solve a problem, and when children were free to roam, make mistakes, and experience the first tastes of independence.

On the Fox News Network, Tom debates, debunks, and entertains with his hilarious approach to issues of the day. Here, he brings that talent and wisdom to the page, tackling the issues that confound many Americans, like our hypersensitive culture and overzealous parenting. As Tom celebrates the stability of family life and the sanity of days gone by, he encourages us to hold on to our sense of humor and look back at our own lives, as we work towards creating a better future for ourselves and our kids, all while making us laugh.

Cassandra's Review-  I could not tell at times if this was humor or sadness in the author's tone.  I do understand writing a book that includes childhood memories to make a point, but some chapters to me were kind of less than funny.

Being tied to a tree, was not something as a reader I was comfortable with the author being so accepting of.  Perhaps as a parent I am a little to protective, but I learned from my childhood and mistakes in a way that helps me to better guide and help my children.

I am not saying that this book is off on the topic or that the author has no humor involved, but I do think that the approach might be a bit hard for some to get passed.   I would recommend this book to any reader that wants a more open attitude toward life and raising kids.

Real Artists Don't Starve by Jeff Goins Review

Real Artists Don't Starve: Timeless Strategies for Thriving in the New Creative Age
by Jeff Goins

Book Description

Bestselling author and creativity expert Jeff Goins dismantles the myth that being creative is a hindrance to success by revealing how an artistic temperament is in fact a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

For centuries, the myth of the starving artist has dominated our culture, seeping into the minds of creative people and stifling their pursuits. But the truth is that the world’s most successful artists did not starve. In fact, they capitalized on the power of their creative strength. In Real Artists Don’t Starve, Jeff Goins debunks the myth of the starving artist by unveiling the ideas that created it and replacing them with timeless strategies for thriving, including

steal from your influences (don’t wait for inspiration),
collaborate with others (working alone is a surefire way to starve),
take strategic risks (instead of reckless ones),
make money in order to make more art (it’s not selling out), and
apprentice under a master (a “lone genius” can never reach full potential).
Through inspiring anecdotes of successful creatives both past and present, Goins shows that living by these rules is not only doable but it’s also a fulfilling way to thrive.

From graphic designers and writers to artists and business professionals, creatives already know that no one is born an artist. Goins’ revolutionary rules celebrate the process of becoming an artist, a person who utilizes the imagination in fundamental ways. He reminds creatives that business and art are not mutually exclusive pursuits. In fact, success in business and in life flow from a healthy exercise of creativity.

Expanding upon the groundbreaking work in his previous bestseller The Art of Work, Goins explores the tension every creative person and organization faces in an effort to blend the inspired life with a practical path to success. Being creative isn’t a disadvantage for success; rather, it is a powerful tool to be harnessed.

Cassandra's Review-  Depending on who you give this book to and how they are linked to the topic, this outcome could be very different as far as liking it or not.   It is well written with the author getting his personal thoughts through to the reader.  If you have no interest in this topic, it may be a bit boring or drawn out.   If you have an artist or young one inspiring to be, then this is a great gift for them to enlighten and focus on the future.

Eats with Sinners by Arron Chambers Review

35254026
If you want to follow Jesus on the incredible journey of sharing Him while sharing life with others, it's time to eat with sinners--people just like you . . . and me.

As long as people have been sharing their faith, there have been critics. Even Jesus dealt with naysayers as He spread His gospel: "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them" (Luke 15:2, NIV). Sometimes we worry about our reputation when we spend time with non-Christians. But more than that, we worry about the time we spend with non-Christians: Will we understand each other? Will I offend them? Will they offend me? How long will it take before this relationship falls apart?

Every meal Jesus ate, He ate with sinners. And over food and drink, through stories and insights and observations and conversations, people let their guards down, and sinners came to know the love of God and the hope of salvation. Now revised and updated, Eats with Sinners helps you to let your guard down so the love of God can get out across the table to your non-Christian friends.

Cassandra's Review Q & A -

- What did you like about the book and why?  It brings down barriers that some strict religious people might face in their belief.

- What did you not like about the book and why?  I could not find any fault with the book, it is faith based and has the author's opinions over fact in most parts.

- What did you learn? If you apply yourself to your own ways and not that of others you may have a more positive life.

- To whom would you recommend this book and why?  If you are closed hearted.  If you feel better then others or more superior, this book may help to keep you a bit more modest.

Two best friends, 500 miles, one wheelchair, and the challenge of a lifetime.

Friendship takes on new meaning in this true story of Justin and Patrick, born less than two days apart in the same hospital. Best friends their whole lives, they grew up together, went to school together, and were best man in each other's weddings. When Justin was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease that robbed him of the use of his arms and legs, Patrick was there, helping to feed and care for him in ways he'd never imagined. Determined to live life to the fullest, the friends refused to give into despair or let physical limitations control what was possible for Justin.

So when Justin heard about the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile trek through Spain, he wondered aloud to Patrick whether the two of them could ever do it. Patrick's immediate response was: "I'll push you."

I'll Push You is the real-life story of this incredible journey. A travel adventure full of love, humor, and spiritual truth, it exemplifies what every friendship is meant to be and shows what it means to never find yourself alone.
