Cassandra's Review-   Share this book with your kids if you love God and want them to learn about the plans he has in store.  Not everyone is going to like this and not everyone will think the same, but everyone can learn.  This is the type of book that your child can love and then gift or keep forever.

NIV Investigator's Holy Bible Review

9780310758761, NIV Investigator’s Holy Bible, Hardcover : Uncover the Truth of the Bible
Have you ever used a magnifying glass? It makes everything bigger and easier to see, right? Detectives and scientists magnify things to understand them better. Well that’s just what this Bible does—it’s a magnifying glass to help children understand the Word of God better.

The Bible is a gift from God, but many of the things written in the Bible are hard for kids to understand. In fact, sometimes they’re downright mysterious to kids. Using kid-friendly language and a detective theme, the two color NIV Investigator’s Holy Bible explains the Bible text for kids ages 6–10. Two central mystery-solving characters invite children to investigate the Bible using the following features:

Evidence—Bible book introductions answer what kind of book it is, who wrote it, what happens, and the “best part”

Breakthrough—answers questions kids might ask, such as “Who were the Philistines?” and “What is The Spirit of God?”

Scene—includes descriptions highlighting geographical information pertinent to a verse

Witness—explains the meaning and history behind Biblical names

Detective—quizzes students on what they have learned

Case Closed—explores how the events of a particular book of the Bible relate to children as individuals

I received a complimentary copy.

Cassandra's Review- If you have a child who asks a lot of questions, this is going to be a really good book for them.  Of course it is a Bible and so it is faith based and for some that might not be what they need.  I think that for my family they can immerse themselves in every aspect of learning and take what they want from it without any pressure.    The book is also going to be easier for slower readers to get.

Die for You by Amy Fellner Dominy Review

Theirs was the perfect love story.

After Emma Lorde’s parents’ divorce forces her to move halfway across the state of Arizona to live with her father, Emma must face her senior year in a new school knowing absolutely no one.

Then she meets Dillon Hobbs, and something just clicks.

Dillon introduces Emma to friends she can call her own. He provides a refuge from the chaos of her past, and the security of a commitment that he promises will last forever. And because circumstances of her messy life forced Emma to put aside her dream of pursuing archaeology, Dillon creates a blueprint for a future together.

He saves her, over and over, by loving her more than she thought anyone ever would.

But just when everything seems picture-perfect, Emma is offered an opportunity that will upend the future they’ve planned. Uncertainty grows, and fear spirals into something darker.

Now Dillon is the one who needs saving.

But how much do you sacrifice for the one you love? What if saving Dillon means losing herself?

Cassandra's Review-  I find this book to be better read first by a parent and then given to a teen, because there is so much to discuss this is going to make it much easier.   It is a book that makes me so glad that I homeschool.   I feel like that author is not holding back and yet remains classy as she tells this tale.  It is mingled with emotions and when I put the book down, I still had a hard time letting it go in my mind.

Pure Heart by Troylyn Ball, Bret Witter Review

About the Book

Troylyn Ball and her husband, Charlie, an engineer and real estate investor, had spent their entire lives in Texas. But after a near fatal trip to the emergency room with their mute, wheelchair-bound son Coulton, they admitted the dust and the heat were too dangerous. To save their boys, the Balls cashed out, sold their beloved farm, and moved to Asheville, North Carolina.

Nearing fifty, Troy thought her chance at adventure had passed. But in this booming little Appalachian Mountain city of hippies, farmers, artisans, and retirees, she unexpectedly discovered a support network and something she’d never had in twenty-five years of providing round-the-clock care for her special needs boys: the freedom to pursue her own dreams.

She struck up a friendship with a legendary eighty-year-old raconteur from the mountains, met his friends, and soon found herself in a rickety country shack with an ingeniously inventive retired farmer trying to create the best recipe ever for traditional mountain moonshine.

But when the real estate bubble burst and the collapse of her husband Charlie’s new venture in Asheville left them deeply in debt, Troy realized her ten-year business plan for Troy & Sons Platinum Whiskey wasn’t enough. If she was going to save her family—and she was definitely going to save her family—she needed to become the most successful woman in the legal whiskey business. And she needed to do it fast, before the bank took her house, her business, and everything she’d worked so hard to achieve.

Full of eccentric characters and charming locations—from a "haunted" cabin in the mountains to the last farm in the world to grow heritage Crooked Creek corn—Pure Heart is a charming story of a woman who set out to find a purpose in the most unexpected of places, and ended up finding happiness, contentment, and a community of love and respect.

Biography of Author:

Troy Ball is the founder and principal owner of Asheville Distilling Company in Asheville, North Carolina, makers of Troy & Sons Platinum whiskey, Troy & Sons Oak Reserve, and Blonde whiskey. Troy & Sons Platinum recently received a gold medal for moonshine, the highest possible rating. In 2004, Troy cofounded the Thoughtful House Center for Children in Austin, Texas, which has recently changed its name to the Johnson Center for Child Health and Development. Today, the center sees over 2,500 children with autism and spectrum disorders and coordinates international medical research studies. Troy lives outside Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband, Charlie, and two of their three grown sons, Marshall and Coulton, who have special needs.

Cassandra's Review-  A perfectly written story, with heart.  The book is so good for older ages because it shares truths that will connect more so for them.  I love that this family did and still does everything they can for not just their family, but by blessing so many others as well.   It is not all roses but the story is real and deserves a good reading.

The Good of Giving Up: Discovering the Freedom of Lent by Aaron Damiani Review

Curious about Lent?

Over the last several years, more and more evangelicals have been observing Lent. Why the influx? Isn’t Lent legalistic? What is gained by giving things up?

In The Good of Giving Up, you’ll get answers to these questions and more. Anglican pastor Aaron Damiani, whose background spans high church and “low” church, explains the season of Lent, defends its theological legitimacy, and guides you in its practice.

After reading The Good of Giving Up: An Introduction to Observing Lent, you will:

Have a compelling, accessible, and evangelical case for the season of Lent

Come away motivated and equipped to practice Lent personally

Discern personal habits and cultural conditioning that make Lent “good medicine” for your soul

Know how to shepherd your children through Lent

Understand the dynamics of leading an entire church through Lent

Lent is much more than giving up meat, sweets, or TV. It is a season of intentional discipline and focus on the Lord—a “springtime for the soul.” Read The Good of Giving Up and learn everything you need for understanding, practicing, and enjoying this ancient, spiritually formative tradition.

"I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this

Cassandra's review- The book is a cool for anyone who wants to learn or participate in Lent.  It is jam packed with knowledge and a really good how to guide.   I think this would be excellent to teach the kids if you choose to celebrate it.

Disaster Falls: A Family Story by Stephane Gerson Review

A haunting chronicle of what endures when the world we know is swept away

On a day like any other, on a rafting trip down Utah’s Green River, Stéphane Gerson’s eight-year-old son, Owen, drowned in a spot known as Disaster Falls. That night, as darkness fell, Stéphane huddled in a tent with his wife, Alison, and their older son, Julian, trying to understand what seemed inconceivable. “It’s just the three of us now,” Alison said over the sounds of a light rain and, nearby, the rushing river. “We cannot do it alone. We have to stick together.”

Disaster Falls chronicles the aftermath of that day and their shared determination to stay true to Alison’s resolution. At the heart of the book is an unflinching portrait of a marriage tested. Husband and wife grieve in radically different ways that threaten to isolate each of them in their post-Owen worlds. (“He feels so far,” Stéphane says when Alison shows him a selfie Owen had taken. “He feels so close,” she says.) With beautiful specificity, Stéphane shows how they resist that isolation and reconfigure their marriage from within.

As Stéphane navigates his grief, the memoir expands to explore how society reacts to the death of a child. He depicts the “good death” of his father, which reveals an altogether different perspective on mortality. He excavates the history of the Green River—rife with hazards not mentioned in the rafting company’s brochures. He explores how stories can both memorialize and obscure a person’s life—and how they can rescue us.

Disaster Falls is a powerful account of a life cleaved in two—raw, truthful, and unexpectedly consoling.

I received a complimentary copy.

Cassandra's Review-  My first thought was what kind of parents let this happen?   Maybe I am overprotective or just care a lot about my family, because trips like this just would not happen.  I can not judge this family and I can not really do anything but pray that they have some type of closure with the help of this book because it is one thing to accidently get your child killed and another to write a book about how it affected your like (lucky you still have one.)  I kind of find it selfish and child neglecting, but maybe as a reader I am just missing the point.

That is why each story in the Relief Readers Insomnia Cure book is written in such a way that it will put the mind into a very relaxed state.

Here is an excerpt from one of the stories in the book. The story is called: Riding a Gentle Breeze

"The carefree moon is now high in the sky. There, it will hover briefly to mingle with the glowing stars. The moon and the stars will vie for the attention of sky-gazers, for dominance of the waxing evening sky. The moon, so big and bright, but able only to reflect borrowed light, while the stars gleam of their own accord. Though further away, they are many, and so they rival the moon for the lead in the stage play that is nighttime. Drinking in their lustrous elegance, I am riding a gentle breeze ever closer to home.

This breeze: tropical, languorous, soothing; has guided me into a lethargic trance. Like the children, I feel myself becoming dreamy. The moon has bewitched me with its power to cast a spell of slumber. Was I ever awake? Riding a gentle breeze, was I carried off by my own dreams of being light hearted, peaceful, tranquil? I cannot even tell, but it matters not anyway, for now I fall deeply, wrapped in that gentle breeze, to a journey to my own mystical, magical place."

So, as you dive into the pages of this Relief Readers Insomnia Cure book, it is our hope that you will experience a better life and existence...A Better Life Through The Science Of Reading...

Returned Trilogy
Returned by Kimberley Griffiths Little After tragedy strikes on the day they were to wed, Jayden must support Kadesh as he ascends the throne and becomes king of Sariba. But with the dark priestess Aliyah conspiring to control the crown, and the arrival of Horeb, Jayden’s former betrothed, Kadesh’s kingdom, as well as his status as king, is at stake.

Jayden knows that the time to be merciful has come and gone, and that some enemies can only be halted by death. Now she and Kadesh must prepare to fight not only for their love, but also for their kingdom. This is the final book in the epic trilogy that began with Forbidden and Banished. Jayden and Kadesh’s love will be put to the ultimate test as they fight a war to save their kingdom.

Praise for the Book   Booklist (starred review) “At its core, this is a romance, with all the push and pull that goes along with impossible love, and Little elevates the story by creating a perilous landscape, both outward and inward, as Jayden must deal with the hardship of desert life as well as her own desires. . . descriptions of the landscape are evocative in both desolation and in beauty. Just as good is the pacing, which gets the blood pumping for both characters and readers. This will heighten anticipation for a no-doubt exciting conclusion.”   Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books “Rich historical details are deftly woven into Jayden’s narration, and the dynamics of Jayden’s tribe are vividly drawn. Jayden’s story becomes as much about finding herself as it is about finding love.”   Reader: “This book took my breath away. I loved the immersive story and the rich setting of ancient Mesopotamia. The customs, traditions, and beliefs of the desert people were captivating and every time I set the book down I couldn't wait to pick it up again. I've never read anything like this before.”   Reader: “Forbidden was so captivating that I awoke early in the morning, while my family was still sleeping, so I could finish the last pages of this beautifully haunting tale.”    add to goodreads
