An Unexpected Life by Victoria Ortiz Review

What are you supposed to do when you are caught in a life you never expected to have? What do you do when you have your heart ripped out of your chest and shoved up your a** How do you breathe? How do you move on with a smile? How do you find the strength to keep going?

Welcome to the mind of a planner whose planned life went up in smoke at thirty-five—divorced, with two kids, and no job. Welcome to me. I have taken in a lot of pain, have dished out a lot of curse words, and have found the strength each day to survive at least the twenty-four hours immediately before me. No more planning. No more sunshine blowing.

I am trying not to let myself be my worst enemy and usually failing at an epic scale. But tomorrow will be another day . .

You can purchase on Amazon.

Author Bio:

Author Victoria Ortiz was born in New Jersey on June 6, 1972, from very poor immigrant parents. Her first crib was a drawer on the floor with towels and blankets. Looking for warmth and new beginnings, her parents drove across the country to Southern California when she was just three months old, where she has lived ever since. There were a lot of expectations with being the first generation American in her family. Victoria graduated from the University of San Diego in 1994 and pursued a successful career in finance. She manages a blended family, works full time, and loves the outdoors, loves to travel, drink vodka, and curse quite

Cassandra's Review-    What do you do when life unfolds in a negative way?  I guess write a tell all book.  The author is upfront and real, she writes from the heart so that you as a reader will feel the trials she faced.  There are more downs then ups and most of the book is quite depressing.  In the end somehow you drag up your strength and become empowered, so I would recommend this to middle aged women who have been burnt by life as well.

Forks, Knives, and Spoons by Leah DeCesare Review

About Forks, Knives and Spoons

There are three kinds of guys: forks, knives, and spoons. Or so Amy York’s father tells her as he sends her off to college. But he never suspects just how far or how seriously his daughter will take this lighthearted advice. Clinging to her dad’s “Utensil Classification System” (UCS) as a guide, Amy leads three female friends and her Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters at Syracuse University in scoping out, over their years on campus in the pre cell-phone 1980s, which potential love interests are dispassionate “spoons,” which are arrogant, inconsiderate “forks” and which are “steak knives” -- the best soul-mate and husband material.

Long after graduation the UCS lives on, shaping the young women’s choices and romances as they continue their quest for the perfect steak knife.

Until the day Amy discovers that she had it all wrong… Only then can she and her friends see the vital importance of believing, above all, in themselves.

Dawn Lerman, bestselling author of My Fat Dad: A Memoir of Food, Love, and Family with Recipes, New York Times Well Blog columnist says, “Leah DeCesare captured me on the very first line, ‘There are three types of guys: forks, knives and spoons.’ With imagination, highly relatable characters, and witty dialogue we are taken back to our youths - reevaluating and categorizing all of our crushes. A lovely story of friendship, love, and the amazing time between childhood and adulthood.”

Jessica Anya Blau, author of The Trouble with Lexie and Drinking Closer to Home adds:
“I couldn’t help but get nostalgic as I read the charming and witty Forks, Knives, and Spoons. There is a delicious innocence and great fun in reading about young women seeking love and romance in a time before a left or right swipe had anything to do with dating. This book is full of heart and hopefulness—a joy to read.”

Cassandra's Review-  A longer read with over 400 pages this book if filled with a few light romances.  It is not overly romantic or uncomfortable to read.  There is traces of humor and found a way to open a forgotten gap in my mind, to as time when dating was a thing and you had to be involved emotionally so much so then today's point and click dating scene.  Of course now and days being able to go and meet strangers face to face is a bit more dangerous especially on campus.

The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb By Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel Review

The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb
Searching for Jesus’ Path of Power in a Church that Has Abandoned It
By Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel

Pastor Jamin Goggin and theology professor Kyle Strobel invite readers on a journey to uncover Jesus’ seemingly contradictory way to power: weakness.

Why do so many rock-star pastors implode under the spotlight? Why do modern-day churches become so entangled in growing their brand that they lose sight of their true purpose? Because, according to Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel, Christians have succumbed to the temptations of power and forgotten Jesus’ seemingly contradictory path to power—first giving it up.

In The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb, Goggin and Strobel paint a richly biblical vision of power through weakness. They invite readers to join them on an adventure around the world, seeking out great sages of the faith with uncommon wisdom to offer those traveling the path of Christian life. As readers eavesdrop on the authors’ conversations with people such as J. I. Packer, Dallas Willard, Marva Dawn, John Perkins, Jean Vanier, James Houston, and Eugene Peterson, they begin to piece together the new-old reality of following Jesus today. In the end, The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb offers a compelling vision of the way of Jesus that will challenge both individual believers and the church as a whole.

Cassandra's Review-  If you have no interest in learning about a faith based book for ministry leaders that can be shared with the community, this is not for you.   I found my eyes starting to blur with a tired heaviness during the reading of this book and I did put it down several times with not much interest in picking it up.  It is clearly for someone who is very interested in the topic.  I do see that the authors put in the work to write it and it does not fall short of the time it took.  I just do not feel it was for me.

The Dog Who Was There By Ron Marasco Review

29492082

No one expected Barley to have an encounter with the Messiah. He was homeless, hungry, and struggling to survive in first century Jerusalem. Most surprisingly, he was a dog. But through Barley’s eyes, the story of a teacher from Galilee comes alive in a way we’ve never experienced before.

Barley’s story begins in the home of a compassionate woodcarver and his wife who find Barley as an abandoned, nearly-drowned pup. Tales of a special teacher from Galilee are reaching their tiny village, but when life suddenly changes again for Barley, he carries the lessons of forgiveness and love out of the woodcarver’s home and through the dangerous roads of Roman occupied Judea.

On the outskirts of Jerusalem, Barley meets a homeless man and petty criminal named Samid. Together, Barley and his unlikely new master experience fresh struggles and new revelations. Soon Barley is swept up into the current of history, culminating in an unforgettable encounter with the truest master of all as he bears witness to the greatest story ever told.

Cassandra's review-  So you have a dog and he is there through just about everything, he has a set of small journeys but never goes too far.   The book has this dog has the main character and as such changes the story to include a younger audience.   Obviously it is lines with Jesus and a biblical account of some kind.   If you like stories where a dog is the lead and you are reading through it, then this is going to be great.
