Cassandra's review- If you are a person who likes to drink alcohol but is worried about the effects, you can mix these great healthy ingredients to your liquor and feel a little better about it.   So, this book is filled with great recipes and the best part is if you decide not to drink alcohol they will taste great without it included.

The Truthful Story by Helen Stine Review

The new book, The Truthful Story by Helen Stine, is part memoir and part fiction and is a tribute to the land and people who shaped her life.

Cover Illustration: Debra Lill Cover Design: Rebecca Lown
Set in the 1960's, The Truthful Story shares the coming of age journey of ten-year old Genevieve Donovan during a tumultuous era and in an unforgettable place. When Genny’s Nannie dies mysteriously in the Lowcountry river she’s loved and lived near all her life, Genny and her family are heartbroken. It is a time when new industry is encroaching on old country, and Genny fears her grandmother may have gotten in the way of so-called progress. As Genny and her family struggle with loss and heartache, she begins to fear her grandmother’s death was not an accident and the drunkard son of a local businessman may have played a role.
The Truthful Story is as timeless as its Lowcountry setting and explores:

·       The understanding that everyone has a gift – something special and unique- to offer to others
·       Believing in the value and wisdom of that invisible space between young and old, black and white, humans and nature, and life and death
·       Life in the South during the 1960’s when industry, segregation and an entire “way of life” was being challenged
·       Inter-generational family dynamics and mother-daughter relationships
·       The celebration of strong women and their love of family
·       Coming of age while coping with family loss, first love, and finding a best friend

About the author:

Helen Stine was born and raised in Charleston, SC. She is a graduate from the College of Charleston with a degree in English. Cassandra's Review-   One of those books that will keep you turning the pages while actually wanting to get to the end, but not because it is well written or the story needs to end.  The thriller part is there and you do have to read into it, but the outcome is so very worth the time.

Weaver's Light by Mara Fields Review

Weaver's Light (Fiction / Fantasy) by Mara Fields

With nothing but his art to get him up every morning, master weaver Callan Vellus mourns the loss of his wife and son at the bottom of a bottle each night. He hardly thinks beyond his next bottle of brandy--until a vision of falcon-faced sorcerers destroying a city with fistfuls of blue flame jolts him into action.

Suddenly compelled to leave his loom and travel to the ruined city, he arrives to discover that the locals believe the fires were caused by lightning from a freak storm. Still haunted by the vision, Callan reluctantly dismisses it as an alcohol-induced dream.

But there is someone else who shares Callan's knowledge of the falcon-faced mages. Pashi is a young orphan girl with a secret: her mother taught her magic in a land that hasn't seen sorcery for eight hundred years. And it is that talent which saved her when the mages invaded and burned down her city.

When Callan finds Pashi in a smoldering ruin, he realizes that the falcon images do exist--and they have much bigger plans than simply burning one city. Together, Callan and Pashi learn that the mages are hunting for the fabled jewels of the ancient Yvis sorcerers so they can take over the entire realm by harnessing their power.

Determined to stop the invasion, they set out on an impossible quest. Can Callan and Pashi protect the jewels, locate the imprisoned Yvis sorcerers, and persuade them to use their powers against the falcon images?

Cassandra's Review-  Heartbreaking and life shattering, this book is a really sad one.   Some parents are the worst and even though they are less than wonderful, it is also the responsibility of the older teens and young adults to be safe.   I have had the privilege of being able to homeschool and really base my life around my family in a way that keeps everyone safe.

Now I am in no way perfect and my children did face bullies in the early years of public school which led to my ultimate choice to give up my freedom and spend 24/7 with my family.   I do not expect praise for being a good parent, that should come without saying.

It just destroys my spirit when I read books like this because although it is well written and open, it still creates this horrid story of just sadness.   It does need to be read and shared because it is real and more people need awareness.

Cassandra's Review- There is not a whole lot about the United States in this book.  One of the kids asked why certain races were put in lower class environments while the caucasians seem to have the best of everything in the book.  Also there were a few pages where the illustrations were showing nudity of the children and the kids did not like that nor did I.

I feel like in a book that tries to focus on differences it is not really bringing together unity and equality.  It also shows just how bad some of the other countries selected out of the many left out, have it.   While there is a bit of information provided, I personally felt that it is not something I would share in a classroom and felt odd pointing out naked children or one undressing, to the kids I was reading out loud with as well as my family.
