Coles Perfect Puppy by Frances Crossno Review

Cole's Perfect Puppy is the first in a series of  Christian novels for young readers 7-12. The story revolves around Cole, his younger brother Caleb, and their new-found friend Rachel who teaches the brothers about friendship, sacrifice, and God's perfect love.

If your child enjoys the Puppy Place series by Ellen Miles, they will likely enjoy the Perfect Puppy books.

Synopsis of Cole's Perfect Puppy:

At the mall pet store, Cole falls in love with a red golden retriever puppy named Scarlet. When Scarlet "escapes" the pet store and runs through the mall, Cole Helps capture her.  He asks his Uncle Bobby to get him a puppy for Christmas.

At Christmas he finds a new pet under the tree- but not a puppy.  It is a pot-bellied pig instead.  After Christmas the pet store owner offers Cole a part-time, after-school job taking care of dogs at the store. Cole vows to save up his earnings to buy Scarlet.

Cole meets Rachel at the mall, where she is doing her homework in the food court. Rachel's mother works at a mall restaurant and they live in a trailer in the parking lot.   Rachel's father was killed in Iraq, and she and her mother were forced out of their house and she had to give up her kitten.  Caleb is a classmate of Rachel, but avoids her because other boys in school tease her for her wrinkled clothes.

Rachel tells Cole and Caleb that she loves cats.  When the pet store acquires three kittens, Rachel is a regular visitor who takes a liking to one of the kittens, a calico, she names Miss Calico.  Rachel, a Christian, tells Cole about Jesus and His love for the world.  Cole listens and thinks about it.

Meanwhile, there are a couple of close calls at the pet store.  A lady wants to buy Scarlet.  Scarlet has other ideas and grabs her purse and takes off through the store.  Cole catches her.  The lady decides the puppy is too rambunctious and buys two of the kittens instead.   Miss Calico, however, is not one of them.
Cole and Caleb's parents are photographers on assignment in Egypt, where there are demonstrations and street violence.  When they lose contact with them, Cole and Caleb pray for their parents' safety. Cole is moved and accepts Jesus into his heart.  Their prayers are answered. Their parents are safe in Greece and will shortly return home.

Caleb stands up for Rachel when another boy taunts her.  Rachel and her mother will leave shortly for California where she will live with her grandmother.

Cole uses his savings to buy the kitten for Rachel before she leaves, which means he must postpone buying Scarlet.

Caleb decides to buy the pig from Cole so his brother has enough money to purchase Scarlet. However, they are shocked to learn that the pet store has closed.  He, Caleb and Rachel rush to the store, only to find it empty.  They pray for the safety of the dogs and that they find good homes.  The dogs will go up for auction with the rest of the store's property.

Cole and Caleb's parents return to the states.  On the way home from the airport, they announce that they must attend an important meeting.  Unknown to Cole and Caleb, the "meeting" is the auction where the pet store's dogs will be auctioned off.  Cole's father is high bidder on Scarlet.  Scarlet gets loose from the auctioneer and races to Cole  - Cole's perfect puppy!

Cassandra's Review- A tearjerker with faith mixed in.   This is for children, but it is not as feel good to me as it is a bunch of bad to worse situations in which putting faith in God would be a great idea.  It actually made my family sad during most of the reading ( I read outloud).  It is well written and the story does flow well.  I just felt more down at the end, I see that this is a book one, but I would not personally read book 2.  In fairness if you like to share stories of this topic with your children it will be a good one.

Sister Eve and the Blue Nun by Lynne Hinton Review

When Sister Eve returns to the monastery, the last thing she expects there is murder.

After solving several mysteries with her father at the Divine Private Detective Agency, Sister Eve finds herself torn between her calling as a nun and the thrill that comes with detecting. She knows she’s been using her father’s health as an excuse to extend her leave of absence from the monastery, but that excuse is running thin. She prays that a return visit to the monastery for a conference on the Blue Nun will help bring clarity to her calling, but when the conference speaker is murdered, Sister Eve’s two worlds collide.

Sister Eve knows the number one suspect, the victim’s brother and monk in residence, couldn’t possibly have committed the crime, and she’s determined to find the real killer. To do so means she must track down some mysterious newly discovered writings from the Blue Nun, said to date from the 17th Century, when the sister bi-located to the New Mexico region from her home in Spain. Could these texts from long ago be the key to today’s mystery? And will they offer any guidance to Sister Eve as she chooses which calling to follow?

Cassandra's Review- I need to start by stating that this is a book 3 in the series and I have never read any of the others.  For me I would have had to read this starting with book one so that I might be able to have time to perhaps get used to the characters and maybe enjoy it more.  I did not really enjoy this book as I feel it dragged on for me rather than creating a place of adventures suspense or mystery.  It fell flat on my expectations after reading about it.
