8 Simple Tools for Raising Great Kids By Dr. Todd Cartmell Review #8SimpleTools #FlyBy

"I love my child, but parenting is hard."

Whether you find parenting intuitive or impossible, we could all use a hand here and there. Let child psychologist and father Todd Cartmell walk you through the nuts and bolts of healthy, effective parenting.

Using examples from his home and 20 years of professional practice, Todd gives eight essential and practical tools to help you:

Maintain a healthy relationship with your child
Develop a nurturing home culture
Correct behavior in lasting ways
Designed for busy parents, 8 Simple Tools breaks each tool into five short chapters that include a summary tip and application questions. Use even half of the tools in your parenting, and your family dynamics will thrive. Your relationship with your child will be built on love and trust, providing you with fertile ground for planting God’s wisdom in their heart, and ultimately, seeing them flourish.

Hello. I'm Dr. Todd!

I earned my doctorate in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. We then moved to Columbus, OH, where I completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Wright State University at the Children’s Hospital. Since then, I have done my clinical work at Summit Clinical Services in Wheaton, IL, where I continue to see children, teens, and families on a full-time basis.

I have written five parenting books (faith based), which you can learn more about on the Books page. I have presented many parenting workshops at mom’s conferences (Hearts at Home, MOPS International), MOPS groups, churches, and schools, which you can read about on the Workshop page. I have also recently developed a skill-building game for kids called The Flexible Thinking Game.

In my free time, I enjoy doing anything with my wife, spending time with my boys whenever possible, reading, running, and playing jazz piano any chance I get. My Christian faith is an important part of my life and thinking, and I am continually thankful for God’s grace, of which I am an undeserving recipient.

Cassandra's review- Armed with a great sense of humor and knowledge this author created a book that helps to make the tedious job of parenting a little lighter.  Of course it is not going to be the book that ends all problems, but it does help out a lot and had a great feel to each chapter.   There are also some great added tips along the way.

Looking for Lovely: Collecting the Moments that Matter by Annie F. Downs Review

"I want you to take every step of your life with excitement for where you are headed. And I want you to feel beautiful and confident as you do."

But how? When the enemy whispers lies that we are not smart enough, pretty enough, or rich enough? Or are you too dumb, too loud, too quiet, too thin, too fat, too much or not enough? What if you don't have what it takes to be who you really want to be?"

In Looking for Lovely, Annie F. Downs shares personal stories, biblical truth, and examples of how others have courageously walked the path God paved for their lives by remembering all God had done, loving what was right in front of them, and seeing God in the everyday—whether that be nature, friends, or the face they see in the mirror.

Intensely personal, yet incredibly powerful, Looking for Lovely will spark transformative conversations and life changing patterns. No matter who you are and what path God has you on, we all need to remember the lovely, fight to finish, and find beautiful in our every day!

Cassandra's Review-  If I had to choose a word to describe this book it would be - blessing- plain and simple.  Why?  Because in every story, faith filled chapter this book has so much wisdom and honesty that it is a huge blessing to be a reader.  It actually made me feel a little better and stronger, so I would recommend this book to any age that would understand just how much quality and compassion it holds.

The Golden Princess by L. R. Garner Review

Alice took a deep breath and faced the menace. As she did so Alwyn, who had also recovered his feet, rushed at her to drag her away to safety. He grabbed her around the waist but Alice swept him aside with a powerful, and almost casual, swing of her arm, sending him flying backwards. The beast, which had started to advance toward her, stopped.

As Alice's power began to work on it, it gradually began to shrink and fade. She took one pace toward the beast and it disappeared completely. From where he was lying, Alwyn saw all that she did. This was not the Alice he knew. What he could see was a tall, strong, stone faced, hard woman with eyes that were glowing white. This was not his Alice.

About the Author

L. R. (String) Garner, born in Lyttelton, New Zealand, in 1932, spent the majority of his working life in the New Zealand Army. This included two periods of active service in Borneo and Vietnam. During his service, he has co- authored books such as Regulations and Standing Orders.

On retirement, he wrote a number of short stories and entered them into competitions and received some nice compliments but no prizes. The Golden Princess was written over a period of ten years, a chapter every three months, for granddaughters and great-nieces in order to keep the spreading family in touch with each other.

Cassandra's Review - Not only did I really enjoy this, but my older teen did as well.  I think the whole book was well written and executed in a way that had me reading at a faster pace and delving into the magic.  I would highly recommend checking out this book as it is a read you do not want to miss and characters written to life.
