Cassandra's Review-  I found this to be a really useful tool to help me grow spiritually. I can find any and everything that I will need in order to teach and learn while connecting more in my faith.  I do not have a special denomination, but I do have a strong belief in God.  I like to be able to reference and come back to things at a later time.  Even after my trial ends, the 3.99 fee per month is not bad when I compare all of the benefits this site has to offer.

Adorable Scoundrels by Howard Eisenberg Review

Adorable Scoundrels
by Howard Eisenberg

A treasury of toddler poems for parents and grandparents - and for toddlers when they’re old enough to read about themselves.

I received a complimentary copy.

Cassandra's Review-  The book is super short. It has a few poems that are kind of harsh, but clean and I felt was more like toddler shaming then anything fun to enjoy.  While the author is correct in everything a toddler does it is kind of mean to say this to a child, even when they are older. I think this book is mainly for adults to sneer and snicker when reading.

Guess who book series By Howard Eisenberg Review

guess who zoo logo

I sun myself upon the rocks
I wear no shoes. I need no socks.
The only school I ever see
Is a school of fish. That's lunch for me.

My furry skin's so warm, it's said
That I can make icebergs my bed
The circus puts me in its shows
To spin beach balls upon my nose.

Grownups applaud and children cheer
When I do back flips on my ear
For me though it is no big deal
It's really easy for a __________.

Guess Who Neighborhood
House-hunting can be fun, but looking for a new home that’s “just right” can get pretty boring. Well, that’s what Todd and Valerie thought anyway. Yawn. But when their parents discover the Guess Who Neighborhood and animals start asking questions, boring suddenly becomes exciting. Would you like to visit their new neighborhood and join the fun? It’s easy!

Guess Who Farm book cover
Guess Who Farm
Young MacDonald (Old MacDonald’s son) has a big problem. He bought 11 animals for his new farm, but they refuse to come out. “No way!” they say. “Not until you guess our names.” But Young Mac is a terrible guesser. “Please,” he begs, “will you guess the animal’s names so I can start my farm?”

Howard and Arlene

For many years, entertaining our three children and six grandchildren, my wife Arlene, (when she wasn't busy writing What to Expect When You're Expecting), made a family tradition of reading poems aloud in ways other than those their poet-creators intended.

But Arlene dealt the bards and their works no permanent damage. Artfully pausing to let them fill in the rhyme blanks, she simply made our kids and grandkids co-poets who, when at first they didn't succeed, tried again. Language skills and vocabularies improved, and they became wonderfully adroit little rhymers and word-players.

Observing Arlene inspired The Guess Who Zoo. And so, on a ten-city book tour, while Arlene visited TV anchor folks, I visited zoos, gathering picture postcards of, and arcane information about, their animal residents. Then, on long intra-city plane trips, I amused myself writing little animal autobiographies in verse, always leaving the last word of the last line blank, and mailing them to our grandchildren in Boston and Santa Fe.

My goal: to amuse, entertain and educate them while hinting that they had grandparents who loved them. I hope The Guess Who Zoo helps you make that same case to your kids.

Cassandra's review- The books are as fun to read as they are for the kids to guess.  Well written and easy for some ages, these books are going to be great for school teachers and libraries all over the world!

Normal Norman by Tara Lazar Review

What is "normal?" That's the question an eager young scientist hopes to answer as she narrates her very first book. Unfortunately, her exceedingly "normal" subject—an orangutan named Norman—turns out to be exceptionally strange. He speaks English, sleeps in a bed, loves his stuffed toy, goes bananas over pizza, and even deep-sea dives! Oh, no: what's a "normal" scientist to do?

Brightly illustrated and brimming with silly scenes that will have young readers in hysterics, this loving look at the wackiness that makes us all special serves as a gentle reminder that "normal" can’t ever be defined. Norman and his scientist friend will encourage and inspire children to embrace their individuality and be their own “normal” selves.

Cassandra's Review-  I fun to read and easy to enjoy book. The author has a strong knack for writing children's books and it shows.  Combined with the great illustrations, this book is super fun to read outloud with the family.

My Picture Perfect Family By Marguerite Elisofon Review

On December 26th, 1990 Marguerite Elisofon gave birth to premature twins: Samantha and Matthew. Marguerite and her husband soon noticed their daughter lagged behind her brother in ways that scared them. Samantha, they learned, was on the autistic spectrum. Most “experts” weren’t optimistic about her chances for leading a normal life and prepared the Elisofons for the worst. But Marguerite and her family refused to accept these limitations. Twenty-three challenging years later, Samantha graduated from Pace University . . . cum laude!

In My Picture Perfect Family, Marguerite tells her family’s courageous story.

At the end of the twentieth century, when the current supports for children on the autistic spectrum did not exist, Marguerite and her family pioneered their own path. They encountered “special” schools with questionable methods, naysayers telling them to lower their expectations, as well as their own worst fears of what Samantha —and their family—might become.

But nothing could shake Marguerite’s determination to hold her family together, and nothing could deter Samantha’s tremendous persistence, boundless energy and drive to succeed. Addressing not only her disabilities but also her talents, the Elisofons discovered Samantha was a lyrical soprano with perfect pitch. They encouraged Samantha to take singing lessons at age ten, and she gradually developed a strong enough voice to perform the national anthem at Pace University’s 2014 freshman convocation.

When you hear about autism, it’s often the extreme cases. But the vast majority of individuals lie somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Marguerite’s memoir is an inspiring account of how an “ordinary” family faced the challenges of raising a child with disabilities and achieved extraordinary results.

My Picture Perfect Family is a universal story about the struggles and successes of a family determined to leave no child behind. It's a tale of unconditional love, a portrait of authentic parenthood, and a message of hope to all families.

Most of all, it’s a true story about never giving up on your child, or your family.

Marguerite Elisofon

Marguerite Elisofon is a New York City writer and the author of My Picture Perfect Family, a memoir about how her family navigated life with a child on the autistic spectrum before the internet and support groups existed. She also blogs about parenting young adults and disability related issues in The Never Empty Nest, which was featured on Fox 5 News.

Her essays have been published in literary magazines such as: Existere: Journal of Arts and Literature, Write for Light, Hobo Pancakes, Wild Violet and Kaleidoscope. A Vassar graduate, Marguerite was born and raised in New York City, where she still lives with her husband, Howard, in their mostly-empty nest.

Cassandra's Review- A nice story of struggle and success.  Being a mother of special needs children, I never have doubts of what they can achieve.  I was not held back by the school system and when problems in the system arose, my children become instantly homeschooled. I feel that every child no matter if they are disabled or not, when given the proper chance to learn can achieve any goal.  I never saw a reason to point out my children or family to others and make a spectacle of them.  The author chose to bring awareness to her situation by sharing with the world her memoir and does so in a classy way.

Rooftop Growing Guide organic urban farming gardening how to guide to do it yourself ( DIY ) by Annie Novak

Tapping into the expanding market for rooftop farming and green roofs, this is the first stylish, easy-to-use book for urban gardeners interested in utilizing their roof space for growing food.

As more people experiment with growing their own food in urban and suburban areas, farms and edible gardens are popping up on rooftops across the country. Cassandra's Review-  I really enjoyed spending time with this book.
