Celebrate the 65th Anniversary of National Engineers Week with U.S. Cellular #BetterMoments

U.S. Cellular

Parent Child Agreement

To celebrate the 65th Anniversary of National Engineers Week, U.S. Cellular is working to help increase understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers by holding “Ask an Engineer” sessions at Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the country.

The goal of U.S. Cellular’s “Ask an Engineer” sessions are to bring engineering to life for kids and show them the different career paths that are available with a technical or engineering education.

U.S. Cellular wants to motivate youth to explore career opportunities in engineering and to encourage a more diverse engineering workforce in the future.

These sessions will give attendees a hands-on look at how U.S. Cellular’s network operates and provide youth with information on career opportunities in engineering.

U.S. Cellular is providing this opportunity so that children and teens can have a behind-the-scenes look at how a cellular network operates and understand how engineering and technology is present in everyday activities.

Without engineers and the technology they build, U.S. Cellular would not be able to provide its customers with national coverage and a high-quality network that works wherever they want to go.

For youth or parents interested in learning more information about career opportunities in engineering, we recommend visiting the official National Engineers Week website at DiscoverE.org.

Smartphone Dating Etiquette

Do you realize how impactful a  role your smartphone plays in today’s dating scene and how using your device can enhance your love life, especially around Valentine’s Day.

The way we date has changed drastically over the years and with the newest technology, such as
Samsung Galaxy S5, users can find “the one” right from the palm of their hand.

Smartphones truly play an impactful role in today’s dating scene as well as in maintaining and enhancing committed relationships too.

The Pew Research Center reports that 21 percent of cellphone owners in a committed relationship have felt closer to their spouse or partner because of exchanges they had online or via text message.

However, maintaining the connection can be difficult, so U.S. Cellular is offering smartphone users etiquette tips to enhance their love life this Valentine’s Day.

Cellphone etiquette tips for texting:

Proper cell phone etiquette is crucial in a successful relationship.

According to a U.S. Cellular survey, 44 percent of smartphone owners find it acceptable to text to ask someone out on a date, so take the leap and ask that special someone on a date.

In fact, the same survey shows 60 percent of smartphone owners prefer communicating via text message over phone calls.

Also, 89 percent of smartphone owners think it is acceptable to text someone during the workweek. If you enjoyed your time on a date, you should follow up with the person. A simple “hello” text message is a great way to start a conversation. Not sure what to say? Ask Siri on the iPhone 6s for the best pick up line.

Other important tips to remember when using your smartphone to enhance your love life are:

Plan ahead and be prepared. It’s so simple and convenient to plan date night right from the palm of your hand. Using your smartphone, take the time to work out the logistics beforehand. While using a smartphone to plan for a date, go ahead and utilize free apps like Open Table to make dinner reservations or check out movie times at a local theatre with apps like Fandango.
  Do Not Disturb- screenshot thumbnail
Be present. According to a U.S. Cellular survey, 68 percent of users think it is rude to check a phone when dining with others. A useful feature to help avoid offending others is the Do Not Disturb button on the iPhone 6s. This button allows users to silence all incoming calls and texts. outside of a select group. When the date is over, simply toggle the Do Not Disturb button and catch up on all of the calls and texts missed while on the date. Additionally, users can download the Do Not Disturb app to stay present during important times.

Be responsive. Relationships take a lot of effort. With 62 percent of smartphone users claiming to be somewhat or extremely annoyed by someone taking more than a day to respond to a voicemail, tension can begin to rise so be sure to respond in a timely manner.

One summer can change everything… Haunted with guilt after his girlfriend’s death, Daniel Hudson has no interest in committing to anyone. At the end of the summer, he’ll be leaving Florida for a new start in college. If only he could avoid the mysterious new girl in town, who seems every bit as naive and eccentric as she looks. Trouble is, she’s hard to ignore, with her beautiful piercing eyes, pitiful-looking dog, and unsettling tendency of finding trouble.

Clover Scott lived her whole life off the grid and arrives on the Gulf coast in search of her grandparents. She never expected to nearly drown, or get caught in a hurricane, or fall in love with the boy who rescues her. Now, she has a chance to rewrite her life’s story, to finally fit in somewhere, but Daniel wants answers about her past. When the police start asking questions about the disappearance of her parents, she must make a choice: go to jail or confess her secrets—even if they might destroy her chance at a happily-ever-after.

Author Interview:

Can you tell us about your book, The Secret to Letting Go, in 35 words or less?

Hi, and thanks for having me! My debut is a contemporary YA about Clover, a girl who is alone, homeless and looking for a place to finally call home. Instead she finds Daniel, the boy who keeps trying to save her. Whew, that’s exactly 35 words!

What was your favorite scene to write?

This is tough to answer without giving away any of Clover’s secrets! I love gripping, emotional scenes. So I loved writing the scenes near the end of the book where Clover faces tough realizations about her past and helps herself and others come to terms with their guilt. Of course, I also loved writing the cute scenes between her and Daniel.

What was the hardest scene to edit out?

I was lucky that my editor let me keep in most scenes, even though I was slightly over the preferred word countJ I did have to edit out a scene between Clover and her grandfather. Her grandfather is a gruff, cantankerous man, who is not used to having a teenager in his life, so I loved every scene where Clover works past his stern exterior and sees the lonely man underneath.

Is this a standalone or part of a series?

This is a stand-alone book.

Do you have a favorite quote from the book?

This is a quote from Daniel, and it says so much about the struggles they are both going through:

His mouth curved into a sad smile. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe neither one of us is ready for this. You can’t take two broken halves and expect them to fit together into something whole. I don’t know much about love, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how it happens.”

Are you currently working on anything else?

Yes! I have several completed books. One is a romantic suspense featuring a young woman from Northern Canada (where I used to live) who gets drawn into a deadly treasure hunt with a morally corrupt young man on the Caribbean island of Curacao (which is where I currently live). Definitely inspired by “Romancing the Stone.”

What is the best book you’ve read recently?

I just finished Falling into Place by Amy Zhang and really liked it. I loved how she constantly switched POVs, but never lost me as a reader. I like books that are different, with unique voices and styles.

What is currently in your TBR pile?

Top of my list is Room by Emma Donoghue. I can’t watch the movie until I read the book, so I have to get to it soon. I’m also looking forward to reading debuts by two of my fellow Entangled authors: Brenda Drake’s Thief of Lies and Pintip Dunn’s Forget Tomorrow!

*Thank you for stopping by Cassandra M's Place Katherine.*

  Excerpt:

“So, I’ll see you tomorrow at noon?” She nodded so hard, her teeth probably rattled. “I’d like that.” It wasn’t like we were arranging a date, so why did her enthusiasm make me straighten up and puff out my chest? “We can meet at the beach next to the pier. My friends and I’ll be surfing. You bring the preserves, and I’ll bring the stove.” Uncertainty flickered across her face, and her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. I should have used her reluctance to back out, but instead I reassured her. “We won’t be hard to find. We’re just north of the pier, and this way we can meet on neutral territory.”

Her expression turned blank. “You know…in case I’m secretly a serial killer. There’s always safety in numbers.” Her lips twitched upward, and she laughed. The sound tinkled through the air like wind chimes on a breezy day. “I already know you’re not a bad person.” “Oh yeah?” She nodded. Her unwavering stare made me want to squirm in my shoes. “True evil can never be hidden. It’s always there, if you know where to look. When I look at you, I see only good things.” I snatched my gaze away from hers and tugged at the collar of my shirt. I wanted to know how she could talk with such authority on the subject. I wanted to know what evil she’d seen, but I wanted even more to escape the narrow store aisle. Warning bells pealed in my brain. She’s crazy. Don’t get involved.   Giveaway Info: $25 Amazon Gift Card (US / Canada) a Rafflecopter giveaway

His intense gaze had me feeling undone. “Are you happy, Kenadie?” “That’s a complicated question.” “Well, you are a complicated woman.” “I don’t try to be.” “It was a compliment.” “How do you do that?” “What’s that?” “You always know what to say to make me feel better about myself.” “Well, that’s easy.
