Internationally famous and reclusive artist Bryan Pierce has a secret. He paints memories of people who have lived in the past. His whole life he has suffered from these recalls. To keep his sanity he paints the dreams and hides from the world—until at an art opening, Linz Jacobs sees one of his paintings that is identical to a recurring nightmare she’s had her whole life. When they meet it becomes the catalyst for Bryan to begin to remember the life of a neuroscientist who died in an accident along with his wife in 1980, right as they were on the brink of curing Alzheimer’s. Solving the mystery of their deaths will lead Bryan and Linz to an even greater legacy buried deep in the past. Both a thriller and a timeless love story, THE MEMORY PAINTER spans six continents and more than 10,000 years.

Jonah By Vince Lane Blog Tour and Giveaway

Release Date: January 2015

Available In: ebook, 280 Pages

“Jonah” by Vince Lane is a work of literary fiction, a period piece written in accented vernacular.  The story is staged in small town Louisiana in the 1930’s during the great depression.

An elderly black hobo “Jonah” shows up begging at the door of two ladies humble shotgun shack.  Though they are poor, they feed him.  So he returns the kindness doing a couple of odd jobs to repay them.  They take a somewhat mystical trusting, and immediate liking to Jonah and offer him a job.

Throughout their time together many amazingly good outcomes happen for the ladies and their families as they are touched by turmoil after turmoil.  The story unfolds a murder and cover up involving a prominent Judge who turns out to be responsible for the hit and run death of one of the ladies husbands.

There is tragedy and death involved, but in the end, the human spirit is triumphant when they realize, only after Jonah has left their midst, that he had been an angel sent to help them through some otherwise horrible times.
Excerpt 3

Even as sparse as the meals that Chris and Mandy could

afford were, I never ever saw them turn away even one of

the homeless folks who came knocking on their door looking

for a handout.  Maybe it was because they both realized that

there but for the grace of God went them.

Often times they couldn’t give much, but somehow they

always managed to help a little.  If only a hard roll and a

bowl of gravy to dip it in, they always gave them something.

It was on one such occasion that a polite elderly colored

gentleman named Jonah came knocking on their door, hat in

hand.  He had his bedroll tied with a string hanging over his

shoulder, and it was obvious that he was homeless and on

the road.

“Mam I sho hates to bother y’all.  But I hadn’t et nothin in

a couple-a days now, an I was wonderin iffen y’all might see

ya way to hep a po fella out.  I’ll be happy to work fo juss

anything y’all can spare.”

“Well, we ain’t got no money…what’d ya say ya name

     “They calls me Jonah, Mam.”

“Well Jonah, we ain’t got much, but I can offer ya a little-a

what we got.”

“How’d ya like a bowl of red beans and rice an a piece-a

corn bread?”

“Aw Lordy Mam, that sho sounds mighty fine, yes it do.”

“Well you just have ya a seat on that ole rocker yonder on

the poach an I’ll bring ya a plate out.”

So Jonah rested his weary bones on that old rocking

chair on the porch while Chris went into the kitchen to get

him a plate of food.

Mandy remarked, “I love the way that salt pork smells in a

good ole pot-a red beans.” as she stirred the beans savoring

the aroma.

Excerpt 3 continued

“Can ya fix me a plate-a food foe that po ole man yonder

Mandy?” asked Chris.

“Is that anotha hungry hobo at the door?”

“Yep; a po ole colored man.  He looks kind-a sickly too.  I

tole him we could spare him a plate-a red beans an rice, an

a piece-a corn bread.”

“Lordy, this depression has put a lot-a good folks out in

the cold.” remarked Mandy as she fixed up the plate of

beans, rice, and corn bread for Jonah.

“Here ya go Chris.  Go feed the po soul.” she said

handing Chris the plate.  Chris walked back out to the porch

where Jonah was sitting in the old rocker.

“Here ya go Jonah.  It ain’t much but Mandy sho can cook

them beans up like no bodies business.”

“Well thank ya Mam dis sho looks mighty fine.  Thank ya.”

said Jonah as he dug in to that plate of beans and rice.

Chris lit a smoke and made small talk asking him, “So ya

been on the road very long Jonah?”

After chewing a bite of corn bread, Jonah answered,

”Well yasum, I been knocking round from here to there, any

which-a way the wind blow me fo a long, long time now.  I

does little odd jobs now an again fo folks when I can.  But

lately folks is holdin on tight to their money and their food wit

the depression an all, an times sho been tough.”

     “Well where ya from?”

“Aw Mam I reckon I’m from all over.  Ain’t had no kin fo

bout long as I can remember, so I juss stays on the move.  I

doesn’t worry bout the time or even care much what day it is.

I can always tell when it’s the Lord’s Day though, from the

hymn singin goin on in all the churches.  Dat sho is a mighty

pretty sound to me.  Dis sho is a real nice little place y’all

gots here Mam.” remarked Jonah looking around, “Real

Chris marveled at the thought of that old man thinking

that their humble shack was a real nice place.
