Samantha Sanderson at the Movies by Robin Caroll Review

The first book in an exciting new series about a girl with dreams to become an investigative journalist, each book promises to touch on a crime straight from the headlines, while also tackling tough issues faced by middle-schoolers everywhere.

A new addition to the Faithgirlz! trusted brand of books introduces readers to Sam Sanderson, an independent, resourceful, tech-savvy cheerleader and aspiring journalist, and Sam's best friend Makayla. They're ordinary 7th graders who enjoy shopping, texting, and going to the mall-along with sniffing out the next big mysteries to report in the school paper.

In this first book of the series, Sam gets the lead on a developing and controversial story when an explosive device is discovered in a local movie theater-controversial because this movie theater has recently come under attack by a renowned, outspoken atheist, for allowing a local church to show Christian movies at the theater. Sam's family has always been strong in their walk with the Lord, and Sam knows what she believes, but for the first time her faith is really put to the test, especially when she compromises her ethics as a journalist when she reports on the case her father is overseeing for the police.

Image of Robin Caroll
Born and raised in Louisiana, Robin is a southerner through and through. Her passion has always been to tell stories to entertain others. Robin's mother, bless her heart, is a genealogist who instilled in Robin the deep love of family and pride of heritage--two aspects Robin weaves into each of her 14 published novels. When she isn't writing, Robin spends time with her husband of twenty years, her three beautiful daughters and two handsome grandsons, and their character-filled pets at home--in the South, where else? She gives back to the writing community by serving as Conference Director for ACFW. Her books have finaled/placed in such contests as the Carol Award, Holt Medallion, RT Reviewer's Choice Award, Bookseller's Best, and Book of the Year.

Cassandra's Review-As this is the first book in a series I think it is a wonderful start. My children and I enjoyed it immensely. The story is great from start to finish and this author does a wonderful job of expression and presentation.

Samantha Sanderson On the Scene by Robin Caroll Review

A new addition to the Faithgirlz! trusted brand of books introduces readers to Sam Sanderson, an independent, resourceful, tech-savvy cheerleader and aspiring journalist, and Sam's best friend Makayla. They're ordinary 7th graders who enjoy shopping, texting, and going to the mall-along with sniffing out the next big mysteries to report in the school paper.

As Samantha and the rest of the middle schoolers prepare for the upcoming Spring Fest, "mean girl" Nikki faces the reality that her parents are getting divorced. It's hard for Samantha to sympathize because of Nikki's unkind reputation. But when Nikki becomes victim of a string of attacks, Samantha takes it upon herself and her super sleuth abilities to get down to the bottom of the bullying.

Cassandra's Review-  This is a powerhouse book of mystery and fun. I am very excited to be a part of reviewing this with my children and you can expect some serious giggles from them as well.  I hope to read more from this author as she does excellent work.

Blind Descent by Brian Dickinson Review

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

Alone and blind at 29,000 feet!
Former Navy rescue swimmer Brian Dickinson was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest—also known as “the death zone”—when his Sherpa became ill and had to turn back, leaving Brian with a difficult decision: should he continue to push for the summit, or head back down the mountain? After carefully weighing the options, Brian decided to continue toward the summit—alone. Four hours later, Brian solo summited the highest peak in the world. But the celebration was short-lived. After taking a few pictures, Brian radioed his team to let them know he had summited safely, and got ready to begin his descent. Suddenly, his vision became blurry, his eyes started to burn, and within seconds, he was rendered almost completely blind. All alone at 29,035 feet, low on oxygen, and stricken with snow blindness, Brian was forced to inch his way back down the mountain relying only on his Navy survival training, his gut instinct, and his faith. In Blind Descent, Brian recounts—in fantastic detail—his extraordinary experience on Everest, demonstrating that no matter how dire our circumstances, there is no challenge too big for God.
Brian Dickinson
Brian Dickinson served for six years as a US Navy Air Rescue Swimmer before he moved to the Pacific Northwest to get his MBA and pursue his passion for extreme sports and mountain climbing. He has climbed in expeditions on the highest peaks of the seven continents, including Mount Everest, with the majority of climbs in the Cascade Mountains, near his home. He uses his climbs to help raise money for charity and as an opportunity to share his faith with others around the world. Brian, his wife, JoAnna, and their children, Jordan and Emily, live in Snoqualmie, Washington.

Cassandra's Review Q&A-
What did you like about the book and why?  It is a survival book. I like the feeling of being a part of the action
- What did you not like about the book and why?  I have heard a lot of the same kind of stories. This one is still really good and offers hope.
- What did you learn? I think when people do things that God does not intend for them to be doing and survive it that they will usually bear witness.
- To whom would you recommend this book and why?  Anyone with a need for inspiration and strength to overcome life's toughest challenges as well as any daredevils that need a reality check.

ALLONS DANSER! (LET'S DANCE!) Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Allons chanter! (Let’s sing!) Allons danser  (Let’s dance!) Apprenons le français  (Let’s learn French!) Get in the language-learning groove with this fun-filled collection of original tunes and beloved traditional favorites performed by internationally-acclaimed French artists Marie-Louise Desage and Didier Prossaird. From “Bonjour Les Amis” to “Au Revoir”, kids and adults will want to dance and sing along to these irresistible rhythms and catchy lyrics that introduce French words and phrases such as numbers (“Un, Deux et Trois”), parts of the body (“La Tête, Les Épaules/Head, Shoulders”) and children’s favorite topics (“Quand Je Serai Grand/When I’m Big” and “Y’a Pas de Fête Sans Gâteau/It’s Not a Party Without Cake.”) A rollicking rendition of “Le Vieux MacDonald (Old MacDonald)” puts a French twist on a beloved classic. Take the music and fun along with this French learning CD which makes learning French as easy as un, deux, trois!

Cassandra's Review- I do not understand most of the words on this CD. It is made to teach children and so I think if I listened to it enough, I could learn something as well. You can hear samples for yourself just by clicking the link above. The company also helps to teach Spanish, and that happens to be what the kids are learning in home school. So I will look into that as well. This is a perfect gift for your home library or fun time as well.

How It All Started...

In 2004, our original founders were living in a new city -- Philadelphia -- and found that avoiding social opportunities with food was not an effective way to make friends. And he was overwhelmed by how challenging it was to find restaurants to take his fiancée (now wife) where he could actually order something gluten-free.

Then his wife had a brilliant idea: "Let's make dining cards to teach restaurants how to prepare gluten free foods!"

Together, the couple visited kitchen restaurants, interviewed chefs, read product labels, and studied dozens of cookbooks. They built lists of foods they could both eat, foods to avoid, and the likely pitfalls they might encounter at restaurants. Eventually, they turned these lists into thorough and foolproof instructions, and enlisted translators - three translators per card, actually - to ready them for ethnic restaurants.

The first time they used the dining cards, Ross was the guinea pig, so you can imagine how glad he was when they actually worked.

He used them in dozens of restaurants across Philadelphia, enjoying corn tortillas at a Mexican greasy spoon -- where nobody spoke English -- and even eating Indian food -- now one of his favorite cuisines -- for the very first time.

Triumph's first customers found success with the cards, too. In fact, most of the sales came from word-of-mouth referrals. The response was incredible!
Philadelphia
Triumph Dining today

We've grown a lot since those early days. Thanks to your great suggestions, we've added several new products, including a Restaurant Guide and a Grocery Guide -- both of which are updated annually. And today, we're the largest independent gluten free publisher in North America.

Triumph remains a family-owned and operated company, with expanded offices in scenic Burlingame, CA -- just a few miles from San Francisco. There are nearly a dozen of us now. We're always hard at work updating our current products and developing new ones, so if there's ever a restaurant or product you'd like to share with our readers, tell us about it and we'll consider it for the guide.

Cassandra's Review- Wow get ready for major information in  this book. It is jam packed with the best grocery guide for the gluten free individuals in your life or yourself. I think this is a wonderful gift for everyone just to browse in their spare time as well.

Foothills of Mt. Empyreal Juniper Grove Book Tour

For hours, she drove in silence, enjoying the beauty of the wintry landscape that

seemed somehow amplified in the quiet of a planet without the noise of technology. The rumble

of the engine against the backdrop of the stillness lured Khrystle into a state of calmness that

she had never before achieved, but when the abomination wrapped its tail around her wrist,

she was jerked back to reality by the sounds of her own screaming.

She slid to a screeching stop and jumped from the ATV. After a deep breath, she put

the demonic spawn back in the cargo space and picked up her shotgun for comfort.

The reprieve was short-lived.

It was a military plane, a fighter jet, and its silent descent from the sky was nothing short

of memorizing. There was an earth-shattering explosion. Moments later, she was blasted off her

feet by the hot wind.

Standing, she watched the black smoke climb into the bright sky. How long she

stood staring, she couldn’t remember, but after a while, she straddled the vehicle and started

the engine.

It had taken her two days to

reach the …

… Devastation.

It took Khrystle a moment to realize that the dissemination before her was the result of

the fighter jet slamming into an Amtrak.

The sickly sweet, acrid smell that seared her throat was so strong she could actually

taste it. When it donned on her that it was the smell of burning flesh, she fell to her knees and

soiled the pristine snow as her body violently emptied the meager contents of her stomach.

At that moment, she couldn’t remember a prayer, so she wept instead.

The dog’s growling was barely heard above the girl’s sobbing, but was loud enough to

cease her tears.

Rising from the basin with the black smoke and red-orange flame was a man. She stood

as she watched him stumble, fall, and struggle to his feet, only to fall again.

Blood poured from beneath his hair to fall across his swollen face like a cascade. The

purple bruising around his right eye had caused it to close; his left eye stared at nothing.

The threads of his charred pants billowed in the winter breeze, exposing muscle and

bone from the rip in flesh above his right knee. Second and third degree burns covered

his skin and a book was clutched within his blistering

arms.

How was it, she asked herself, that this man would be able towalk away from a train

wreck?

When he was mere feet from Khrystle, he collapsed. She ran to him. Kneeling, she

unzipped her duffle bag, but was distracted as she reached in for her medical kit.

It was a feather, a large black feather from a crow. She looked up in time to watch the

black bird land on the power line. Before she had the time to look away, another bird landed.

And then another, and yet another.

In just minutes hundreds of crows were assembled judiciously above her.

Their silence was alarming.

She dragged her attention from the birds to the man who lay injured. That simple act

caused her vision to blacken along the edges.

Her question was answered when she saw the book he clutched. The storm that

surged across her mind was as forceful and devastating as a category five hurricane, leaving

debilitating fear and biting goose bumps in its wake.

… And through the dark, he will come to shield the book.

The embossing on the book was written in Aramaic, but she knew what it said anyway.

This is the Book of the First.
And through the dark, he will come to shield the book.

Jessica heard the words as if they came to her from some faraway place, but she was very sure of what

was being said. Despite the fact that the words were not English, some primal instinct made the words

as clear as her mother tongue.

In the dream, she was outside in the snow. From a mountain top she looked down and saw the town

below. Part was lost in smoke and ashes. She could make out movement in the streets. Black crows rose

in the air, unfettered by the acid snow that fell upon them.

Blog Tour: Fledgling by Nicole Conway Giveaway and Scavenger Hunt Stop 14

 Title: Fledgling
Publication date: April 29, 2014
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Nicole Conway
Can one boy stand between two kingdoms at war?
Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal. But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.
While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor.

Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test. “What a good boy,” she said, patting my cheeks until it stung a little. “But still so skinny. Doesn’t Serah feed you at all? Sit down, Jae. I’m making your favorite.” Katty plopped down in a chair across from me at their kitchen table, grinning as she slid a plate and spoon in my direction. “There was a dragonrider at his house today, momma.” Her eyes were still sparkling with excitement about it.
“Yeah, but he didn’t bring his dragon.” I added, sighing and twirling the spoon through my fingers. Mrs. Crookin brought over a platter of steaming hot sweetbread, fresh out of the oven. The smell made me dizzy with hunger, and it was hard to sit and wait while she put out jams, that delicious cinnamon butter, and mugs of warm milk for us on the table. “Not surprising, is it dear? It’s nearly springtime.”
Nicole is the author of the children’s fantasy series, THE DRAGONRIDER CHRONICLES, about a young boy’s journey into manhood as he trains to become a dragonrider. She has completed the first two books in the series, and is now working on the third and final book.
Originally from a small town in North Alabama, Nicole moves frequently due to her husband’s career as a pilot for the United States Air Force. She received a B.A. in English with a concentration in Classics from Auburn University, and will soon attend graduate school.
She has previously worked as a freelance and graphic artist for promotional companies, but has now embraced writing as a full-time occupation.
Nicole enjoys hiking, camping, shopping, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. She also loves watching children’s movies and collecting books. She lives at home with her husband, two cats, and dog.
