Scared Stiff Everything You Need to Know About 50 Famous Phobias by Sara Latta Review

Teen Nonfiction
Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Zest Books; Original edition (February, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-13: 978-1-936976-49-2
Everyone knows what it is to be afraid. But phobias take the normal (and even helpful!) human emotion of fear to a much more visceral, even primal, place. For some people, it’s a spider that does it. For others it’s a clown, or a trans-Atlantic flight, or even just a puddle of water. It’s the thing that stops us in our tracks, sets our hearts racing, and stands our hairs on end. Scared Stiff takes readers on a journey through these experiences—using biology, psychology, and history (not to mention pop culture) to explain where our phobias came from, how they affect us, and how we might eventually overcome them.

Inside You’ll Also Find:

✳ An explanation of the history behind each of these fifty phobias, and a discussion of notable people who have suffered from the fear
✳ Sidebars that highlight famous phobic moments from history and pop culture
✳ Updates on how successful the various phobia treatments have been

Phobias are no laughing matter, but sometimes the first step to overcoming our anxiety is understanding that sometimes we’re afraid of some really weird things. So whether you’re looking for perspective, information, or just want to know what keeps Madonna and David Beckham up at night, this is the book for you. (Bibliophobes, however, should probably keep their distance!)

Cassandra's Review- Details and information that is contained in this book is extremely helpful and worth the very short time it takes to read it.  My older children love that is helps to focus on some of the really hard preparations and choices that they will eventually have to make. A great book for older teens and adults, I would not think too young a child would be interested but they would benefit as well.

A Stillness of Chimes by Meg Moseley Review

What if the pain of the past revealed an unknown sacrifice that changes everything?

When teacher Laura Gantt comes home to Prospect, Georgia to settle her recently-deceased mother’s household, the last thing she expects to encounter is a swirl of rumors about the father she lost to the lake twelve years ago—that he has reportedly been seen around town. Elliott Gantt’s body was never found and he was presumed dead.

Reeling from the sharp loss of a parent, Laura must now grapple with painful memories surrounding her father’s disappearance and the sense of abandonment she experienced after his death. Life-long friend and former beau Sean Halloran wants nothing more than to protect Laura from the far-fetched stories of Elliott’s resurrection and to care for her, but he has his own reasons, troubling echoes from his childhood, to put Elliott’s disappearance to rest.

Working together, Laura and Sean begin to uncover the truth, one mired in the wooded peaks and deep waters of the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding Prospect. Can they fathom how many secrets the steep hills hold? With surprising facts revealed, will Laura be able to understand the sacrificial choices made that forever changed her life? And can love and a peace with God be rekindled in her heart after so much time has passed?

Jason’s Eagle by Dr. Julie E. Antoine, is Volume 6 in the delightful Too Clever children’s book series.
In the first story, Jason was five. Now he is ten and full of himself. However, he has maintained his love for the American Bald Eagle, only now he is experiencing many more amazing adventures.

He lives on the shores of the Long Island Sound, near the Connecticut River. He is so fascinated with the American Bald Eagles that fished in the waters near his home, he spends every free moment he has watching them.

Everything about the bald eagles fascinates Jason, from the way they fly in the sky to the way they hunt for food. Even the way they build such huge nests grabs his attention. No other bird flies like the bald eagles.

To ten year old Jason, the bald eagle is absolutely awe-inspiring. No other bird species commands such attention and respect when in flight.

The eagle's every movement is graceful and regal. And he feels a special thrill at the way it turns its head to look at him, when he gazes at it through his binoculars.
