Cassandra's Review-  Even if you do not want your kids to sell things, this book is filled with recipes and crafts that your whole family will enjoy and are super kid friendly.   It would be perfect for party planning as well.  You can also prepare everything on a super tight budget.

I really enjoy the easy to see photo that explain the directions as well as how easy it is for younger kids to read and follow which means more time having fun and not frustrating the children.

Photography Interview with Matthew David Parker

Photography Interview with Matthew David Parker

I want to thank Matthew for taking time to stop by the blog today for a Q&A!

1. What is the best time of day to take a photo?

The best time of day to take photos will depend on the sunlight. Lighting can change the atmosphere of any photograph, and natural lighting can change quickly throughout the day. Typically, just before sunrise and just after sunset are the best times for outdoor photography, as this is when the light is the least harsh. These two hours of the day are known as the “golden hours” in photography. Conversely, at midday, when the sun is directly overhead and the light is the harshest, is the worst time to shoot.

2. Do you have a tip for preventing lighting glare?

Glare is caused by a phenomenon known as “lens flare.” If light, from the sun or an artificial light, hits the front of camera lens you will almost always get flare. There are two types of flare, with the first being “specular flare” that looks like streaks or circular blobs or the image. The other type of flare is called “veiling flare.” This is where light sneaks into the darker, or shadow areas, of a photograph. Veiling flare is usually more subtle than specular flare, and typically happens when a subject has too much backlight, such as shooting into the sun.

The only way to avoid flare is too prevent direct light from hitting the camera leans. Outdoors, use a lens shade and don’t shoot in the direction of the sun. Indoors, position artificial lights so the light hits the subject from an angle.

3. Is there a certain way to hold your camera for a best angle?

Changing the angle of the camera can help tell the story. Shooting from different positions, such as above or below the subject, can add dramatic effect to a photograph. Shoot from a lower angle if you are trying to make a subject look larger than life, whereas shooting from above can create an awe-inspiring scene. As when taking any photo, be sure the camera is supported properly to avoid a blurry image. Bend your elbow and brace your arm against your body if you don’t have a tripod.

4. Can you take a quality picture with an iPhone or other device?

The answer is both yes and no. Smartphone- and tablet-camera technology continues to improve each year. Good-quality photos are possible, provided the phone’s camera has a high enough resolution. However, professional-quality results will typically not be achievable with a Smartphone. Here are few tips:

• Focus on one specific subject, making it the main object in the frame and try to keep your backgrounds as simple as possible. This may mean moving closer to or farther away from the subject.

• Find a camera app that allows you control of exposure.

• While it may seem a little silly, as the expression goes, “It’s not the violin, it’s the violinist.” In other words, practice taking pictures with your phone until you are proficient. That way, you’ll be ready when the opportunity for the perfect shot presents itself.

5. Would you recommend taking photos while the image is moving or how can you?

Like all aspects of photography, shooting a moving subject just takes practice. However, the time spent learning this technique is well worth it, as it can add a real sense of drama to a shot. What you want to accomplish is make the subject appear static while blurring the background, so as to add a sense of speed to the photo. Center the subject in the viewfinder and pan, or move, the camera to keep the subject in the same spot in the viewfinder while you snap the photo.

“There are lots of delicious foods out there.  Plenty of recipes with fat and sugar that taste really, really good.  I think we all know that,” Victoria explains. “But I realized that what people didn’t know…is that light food can be just as satisfying.  That’s why I wrote this cookbook, so everyone can feel good about themselves and never, ever feel deprived.”

Secrets of Skinny Cooking features:
- Over 135 delicious and easy-to-prepare recipes, with breathtaking photos for each dish
- Secret techniques and tips for zapping the calories from any dish ... without zapping the flavor (such as, "How to Sauté and Caramelize Onions Without Oil.")

Crispy Eggplant Wontons with Two Dipping Sauces
Skinny Pasta Alfredo
Spinach Stuffed Chicken Thighs
Spicy Chicken Lo Mein

“A diet should be a way of life that you can live with forever.  It doesn’t mean not eating,” says Shani.  “A diet simply means that you know exactly what you’re eating, even if it changes as time goes on, whether you want to lose weight or just maintain.  A healthy person is never full and never hungry, just content and satisfied.”

Whether you've always enjoyed light, healthy eating, or want to lose or maintain weight, Secrets of Skinny Cooking offers more options than you ever thought possible. Why settle for bland dietetic food and restrictive eating plans when you can enjoy Victoria and Shani’s delectable recipes?

Portobello Mushroom Towers
Yields 2 large servings
Dairy ▪ Gluten-Free ▪ Low Carb ▪ Sugar-Free
Calories: 181 per serving; Shani Taub Exchange: 1 protein, 1 Vegetable

One summer Sunday afternoon, my family and I passed through Monsey, stopping at the Evergreen shopping center. I really wanted iced coffee, so I headed to Hava Java. As I waited for my Skinny Frappe (one of the best ever), I watched the hot dishes emerge fast from the kitchen. One dish that caught my attention was the towering Portobello Mushroom Sliders. I went home and recreated the dish … and it was just as
good as it looked.

2 Portobello mushroom caps
¼ cup red wine vinegar
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp dried basil
½ tsp salt

1 red pepper
½ onion, sliced
1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling
½ onion, diced
8 oz frozen spinach, thawed, drained
2 (1-oz) slices Muenster OR mozzarella cheese

[1] Place mushroom caps into a ziplock bag. Add red wine vinegar, garlic powder, basil, and salt. Seal; marinate for 1 hour or up to overnight in the refrigerator.

[2] Preheat oven to 400ºF. Place mushrooms and marinade into a baking pan; bake for 25 minutes.

[3] Meanwhile, place red pepper into the oven (on its own or in a baking pan). Roast until skin is blistered, about 35-45 minutes. Let cool; peel and discard peel and seeds. Slice pepper; set aside.

[4] Coat a sauté pan with nonstick cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat. Add sliced onion; lower heat and sprinkle with salt. Cover; cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are golden, about 15 minutes. Remove from pan; set aside.

[5] Coat the sauté pan again with nonstick cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat. Add diced onion; lower heat and sprinkle with salt. Cover; cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft, about 5 minutes. Add spinach; cook an additional 2 minutes. Season with salt.

[6] Assemble the towers: Top each mushroom with half the spinach mixture, half the peppers, and half
the onions. Top with one slice of cheese; bake until cheese is golden and bubbling, 9-10 minutes.

Make Ahead: All the components of this dish can be made ahead and stored separately in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Simply assemble and bake when ready to enjoy.

Red Pepper Fettuccine
Yields 2 servings
Dairy ▪ Sugar-Free
Calories: 241 per serving; Shani Taub Exchange:  1 Bread, ½ Protein, ½ vegetable (medium portion)

This dish is for those who need their hearty pasta dish. There’s half a serving of pasta in each portion; eggplant stands in for the rest. It’s become one of my family’s all-time favorite pasta dishes, high cal or low cal.
(Who needs penne alla vodka anymore? I’d rather have this!)

2 oz fettuccine or any wide, flat pasta (such as pappardelle)
1 eggplant, peeled, sliced thinly lengthwise
salt, for sprinkling
1-2 Tbsp Parmesan shavings, for serving

1 red onion, diced
1 garlic clove, crushed
salt, for sprinkling
1 Tbsp tomato paste
1 red pepper, halved, stem and seeds removed
⅓ cup plain Greek yogurt

[1] Preheat oven to 425ºF. Prepare pasta according to package instructions; set aside.

[2] Cut eggplant slices into long, thin strips a little wider than your pasta. Place into a colander; sprinkle with salt. Let sit for 20 minutes over a bowl or in the sink; rinse and dry.

[3] Place pepper cut side down on a baking sheet coated with nonstick cooking spray; bake until skin blisters, about 40 minutes. Let cool; peel pepper and discard peel.

[4] Meanwhile, add eggplant slices to a baking sheet; bake for 20 minutes.

[5] Prepare the sauce: Coat a sauté pan with nonstick cooking spray; heat over low heat. Add onion and garlic; sprinkle with salt. Cover pan; cook until onion is soft, 7 minutes. Stir in tomato paste.

[6] In a blender, combine onion mixture, red pepper, and yogurt.

[7] When ready to serve, coat the sauté pan with nonstick cooking spray; heat over low heat. Add pasta and eggplant strips to the pan. Add red pepper sauce; toss to coat. Season with salt to taste. Serve topped with a sprinkle of Parmesan shavings per serving.

Shani Says: I love when vegetables are added to stretch a dish. Since a man can have 2 breads for dinner, he can have the entire recipe for only 2 breads, 1 vegetable, and ¾ protein! It’s a huge dinner! Omit the Parmesan and enjoy it along with a piece of fish.

I received a complimentary copy.

Cassandra's Review- The recipes are simple, easy to understand and do not coast a small fortune to create.  They can help with everything from weight loss to overall better health and anyone can eat them.

Every Job a Parable by John Van Sloten Review

(from Goodreads)

A Walmart greeter, a nurse, and an astronaut walk into a church. . . .

They each bring with them their own exhaustions and exasperations, their own uncertainty about whether and how their work matters to God. Good news: All work matters to God, because all work reflects some aspect of the character of God. God created the world so that it runs best when it mirrors Him, and we ourselves find the most fulfillment when we recognize God behind our labor.

John Van Sloten offers a fascinating and innovative reflection on vocation: Our work is a parable of God; as we work, we are icons of grace.

I received a complimentary copy.

John Van Sloten

John Van Sloten is a pastor in Calgary, Alberta. He is the author of The Day Metallica Came to Church: Searching for the Everywhere God in Everything. He teaches a preaching course at Ambrose Seminary and has been the recipient of several John Templeton Fund grants for preaching science.

Cassandra's review Q&A-

- What did you like about the book and why? I like the open ideas that this author has for each person's work choice ans well as abilities and how he ties them into God's plan.

- What did you not like about the book and why? It does not cover every job and what about people who can not work but volunteer?

- What did you learn? The author has a very unique and expressive way of writing that will make the reader believe his words to be true.

- To whom would you recommend this book and why? Someone who wants to find God through working.

Depend Silhouette Active Fit FREE SAMPLE #OwnYourGreatness #AD

Wow, some days I can just about make it to a toilet in time, but what about when I am out and about, shopping or at the park and the restrooms are either dirty or nowhere to be found?  What do you do?  Well I have to admit that I have had to do everything from sit on the side of the road over a guardrail to mimic a toilet to even making a bit of a mess trying to squat down in the midst of a bladder call out.   I know some women have no problem going in the outdoors, but I have a constant fear of soiling myself and having to experience it for the whole day.

I also do not like having to plan around a toilet for most things.  The struggle is real and with Depends at least I can be a little more free.   As long as I bring spare changes of clothes and extra briefs, I can spend a little more free time doing what I enjoy.  I think that the brand should make larger sizes because boxing a women's fit and comfort in two sizes is not the best idea.

Pregnant or really plus size women will not be able to wear these at even the biggest size.   The pads are going to soak up a light leak and hold it until you can get to a place to change.  Also I would recommend ripping or bring scissors to cut them off rather then dragging them up and down on your legs.   These are really good for your time of the month as well especially if you are worried about shifting or have excess bleeding.

Cassandra M's Place has partnered with Depend and has received complimentary product.

The two women below have also partnered with Depend in an effort to bring the discussion to the forefront and to help women understand that bladder leakage isn’t just normal – it’s also very common.

· Suzie Haines, 45, first started experiencing incontinence while running a marathon. She had the sudden urge to use the restroom but didn’t make it in time. After that “oops” moment, she would map out the closest bathrooms everywhere she went. She didn’t really have anyone to talk to and didn’t know where to turn for help. Eventually, she started using pads, until she found Depend, which she says made all the difference – boosting her confidence and helping her feel protected all day. Today, she’s a fitness instructor, yoga enthusiast and active mom who embraces each day worry-free.

· Entrepreneur and community activist, Dyan, had always lived an energetic and fulfilling life. So when she started to experience incontinence, she did everything she could to prove to herself and her family that she could still pursue her dreams; even if it meant rushing to the bathroom more times than she’d anticipated throughout the day. After a while, Dyan was convinced that there had to be a better way to live without changing her on-the-go lifestyle. That’s when she decided to try Depend and she hasn’t looked back since. Today, she’s teaching children dance routines at her own studio and performing with her own dance group (featuring women ages 40+) at national sporting events, including the LA Clippers and LA Sparks.

Out of the Dark, Deluxe Edition - By: Mandisa

Mandisa wrote her song “Overcomer” in 2013 to encourage her close friend Kisha, who was battling breast cancer. Mandisa really believed and prayed that God was going to heal her, but when Kisha went to be with Jesus in 2014, Mandisa’s foundation was shaken in a way she never expected.

She fell into a deep pit of depression for close to 3 years, shutting out her friends, family and the rest of the world. Mandisa believes if she had kept going down that road she was on, she would not be here today… but God stepped in and lifted her out of that pit by using her close friends to communicate their love for her and God’s love for her. This album is Mandisa’s way of letting her fans into her story – it’s called 'Out Of The Dark' because that is exactly where God lifted her out of!

Cassandra's Review- The soul and flavor of the artist makes this good tempo explore with faith as well as power.  Get ready to obp around your home or get the movement in your car because this CD is going to keep you wanting to really move around.  When you get a blessing and a good workout it is a huge bonus, and with this CD I think you will get both.   Clean enough to dance with the kids and not feel guilty about the lyrics.

US Organic's Carrier Oils are perfect for moisturizing and nourishing the skin and come in three fragrances including Jojoba Oil-Golden, Moroccan Argan Oil and Rosehip Seed Oil. Each scent has a distinct benefit:
Jojoba Oil-Golden is known to be a good lubricant with excellent moisturizing ability, Argan Oil is beneficial for all skin types due to its rich fatty acids which help rejuvenate the skin, and Rosehip Seed Oil contains omega 6, 3 and 9 and is full of the vitamins. This line comes in various sizes—2oz, 4oz and 8oz

I recevied complimentary product.

Cassandra's review- I was pleased with both the scent and how easy it is to apply the products and as far the the bug spray, it does keep bugs at bay, but it did need to be reapplied and I prefered to use it on the clothing rather than the skin.   It does not keep bugs from coming near, you just from landing on you and only on places where the spray is located.

The Good Book
The Good Book: 40 Chapters That Reveal the Bible’s Biggest Ideas (David C. Cook, April 2017)

The Good Book offers a user-friendly guide to the Bible’s biggest ideas.

A chapter from the Bible accompanies each chapter of the book, which helps readers understand the context and content of the Scripture passages in a way that can open the whole Bible.

Designed as a forty-day journey through forty key chapters of the Bible, The Good Book will appeal to those who already love and read the Bible regularly as well as to those who are just beginning their Christian journey.

The Good Book:

—is a great evangelism tool for explaining the major themes of Scripture to those who want to know more about God, Jesus, and the core beliefs of Christianity;
—gives new believers an overview of the Bible and lays a framework to help them understand Scripture passages;
—helps longtime Christians rediscover the basic themes of Scripture and experience these truths in a new way; and
—encourages Scriptural literacy as it pushes readers to read both one chapter of the book and one chapter of the Bible each day for forty days.
The Good Book is great for individuals, and it can also be used by small groups in an eight-week church-wide program or a forty-week journey that focuses on one Bible chapter each week. The Good Book will help people understand and live by the transformative truths of the Bible.

The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook by Patsy Catsos Review

(As seen on Goodreads)

From the leading expert in FODMAPs and IBS, this is the go-to guide and cookbook for overcoming IBS by discovering your FODMAP sensitivities and eliminating them from your diet.

Originally self-published as IBS--Free at Last! and now expanded with 50 recipes, this is the bible of the low-FODMAP lifestyle. FODMAP is an acronym for a group of difficult-to-digest carbohydrates found in wheat, milk, beans, and soy, as well as some fruits, veggies, nuts, and sweeteners ("fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols"), and this book walks you through eliminating all of them from your diet, and then adding them back in one by one to discover your unique sensitivity fingerprint. Originally developed by researchers at Monash University in Australia, the low-FODMAP diet offers relief to IBS sufferers (estimated 64 million in the US), as well as those with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and nonresponsive celiac disease.

The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook offers the theory along with a step-by-step elimination program, comprehensive Q&A's, delicious recipes, and 25 full-color photos.

I received a complimentary copy.

Cassandra's review -  The book covers a lot of the IBS issues that someone with the problem would deal with.  It helps to give guidance and a tool for leading the readers to a better food experience.   It serves as great ideas not really a plan for everyone as that would be impossible.  The reader will gain a good amount of skill from reading the book.

Help Your Child Avoid Summer Tantrums with These Tips from Brain Balance

Summer is supposed to be full of blue skies, popsicles, and sprinklers. But it can be a lot of pressure to keep the kids occupied when school is out. It's hard for me to set the kids up with activities that keep them learning and engaged. It can be particularly tough for parents of kids with behavioral, social, or learning difficulties.
So I partnered with Brain Balance www. brainbalancecenters . com a drug-free, holistic approach to addressing the challenges of behavioral, social, or learning disabilities—to try some of their summer activities, and to share a little bit about their philosophy. And let me tell you, their activities actually work. I'm so excited to keep this momentum going into the summer!

First, here's the context I learned from Brain Balance about why my children sometimes act up. We all know about the left and right halves of our brain—but did you know that the root cause of most learning, behavioral, and social difficulties is an imbalance between them? Left hemisphere dominant children are very detail oriented and logical, while right hemisphere dominant kids tend to be more emotional. It's because of this imbalance that programs that combine sensory motor stimulation, academic stimulation, and nutrition can correct brain imbalance and ultimately improve achievement. The activities are great for children without difficulties, too!

Now are some of those Brain Balance summer tips I told you about.

Activities that involve active physical motion help children to read with greater comprehension and retain more information. Enjoy the spring sun by taking your child on an outdoor gallery walk, or take the fun indoors to an exploration-style, hands-on museum. Additionally, children should maintain a daily practice of prescribed left/right brain stimulating activities, including primitive reflex, core, and eye exercises.

Routines keep children grounded—and they are especially necessary during breaks, when the regular school schedule goes out the window. Let your child have input into their schedule—it will give them agency and make them feel empowered.

Sugar-free, processed-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free foods bring tremendous benefit to your child's overall health and development. Spending time as a family cooking together also allows everyone to enjoy discovering healthy eating through a fun and engaging activity. It's also a great idea to let your child do simple activities like measuring ingredients, dividing up portions, and reading recipes. This reinforces their reading and math skills without making them feel intimidated. Plus, it helps you with dinner!
