Living the Spirit-Formed Life by Jack Hayford Review

Living the Spirit-Formed Life: Growing in the 10 Principles of Spirit-Filled Discipleship
by Jack Hayford
New Look for Landmark Teaching on Living the Spirit-Empowered Life

In our instant-gratification culture, we consume a fleeting, shallow diet of media, relationships, entertainment, and spirituality. Our souls go hungry, longing for a fuller, more satisfying life.

Bestselling author and beloved pastor Jack Hayford shows, in what has become a modern-day classic, how we can feed our deepest places with the sustaining Bread of Life. With warmth and wisdom, he reveals how we can link our souls to timeless practices and principles set forth in Scripture. He invites you to rediscover the power and blessing of these spiritual disciplines--of true Spirit-fullness.

Even more, he shows how these spiritual disciplines are relevant for today and how we can practice them in our quick-paced, surface-level culture. When we take time to fast and pray, worship daily, feed on God's Word, and more, we fully enter the rich adventure of becoming an effective disciple of Christ--ensuring that our souls will never go hungry.

Cassandra's Review-  Depending on your outlook on religion and if you are a believer of the words presented in this book, the outcome of your own personal review will be different and I am sure this book will spark a few discussions, but as a reader I felt that even though I might not agree with certain topics included, I was able to view the author's points and take them into consideration.  If you enjoy faith based reading, this is going to be a good, but if you feel like communion ets are not your thing, this may be a book to pass on.

All Saints by Michael Spurlock and Jeanette Windle Review

All Saints by Michael Spurlock and Jeanette Windle
The True Story Behind the Powerful Film ALL SAINTS
Newly ordained, Michael Spurlock's first assignment is to pastor All Saints, a struggling church with twenty-five devoted members and a mortgage well beyond its means. The best option may be to close the church rather than watch it wither any further. But when All Saints hesitantly risks welcoming a community of Karen refugees from Burma--former farmers scrambling for a fresh start in America--Michael feels they may be called to an improbable new mission.

Michael must choose between closing the church and selling the property--or listening to a still, small voice challenging the people of All Saints to risk it all and provide much-needed hope to their new community. Together, they risk everything to plant seeds for a future that might just save them all.

Discover the true story that inspired the film while also diving deeper into the background of the Karen people, the church, and how a community of believers rally to reach out to those in need, yet receive far more than they dared imagine.

The Reverend Michael Spurlock served All Saints Episcopal Church in Smyrna, Tennessee, for three years. He is currently on the clergy staff at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City. Michael, his wife, Aimee, and their two children live in New York City.

Award-winning author and investigative journalist Jeanette Windle has lived in six countries, authored nineteen books, and mentors writers on five continents. To learn more, visit her at

Cassandra's Review-  Would you help a refugee? Would you change your whole community by taking in a new community?  Knowing the facts and doing them are two different things, but this pastor lived them and is recounting it all for the reader.  The book takes you on a deeper meaning trip into the mind of someone who loves and wanted to be full in the presence of his God.  It is faith based.

Citizen Newt By Craig Shirley Review

Citizen Newt
The Making of a Reagan Conservative
By Craig Shirley

The definitive, authorized biography of one of the most important, provocative, and visionary political figures of our time.

In one way or another Newt Gingrich has been leading a revolution for most of his life. Citizen Newt is the definitive account of that struggle. Writing with the full cooperation of Speaker Gingrich and the players around him, New York Times bestselling author Craig Shirley captures the events, ideas, failures, and successes of Newton Leroy Gingrich--one of the most complex, influential, and durable political figures of our time.

Returning to Gingrich's childhood in Pennsylvania and his formative years as a young history professor, Citizen Newt moves through Gingrich's first forays into politics and takes readers behind the scenes of the Congressman's crucial role in the Reagan Revolution, his battles with George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and his masterly orchestration of 1994s "Gingrich Revolution" and the Contract with America, which catapulted him to national prominence and forever changed congressional and national politics.

Drawing upon untold stories from Gingrich and those who know him best--political allies and opponents, Washington insiders and political iconoclasts, Capitol Hill staffers and colleagues--Shirley has crafted a fascinating, humorous, humanizing, and insightful account of a true American original.

Cassandra's Review-  If you can get through the description of this book without being bored or losing interest, then this hugely thick book will be a great read.  I found myself having to put it down a lot, and not just because it was super heavy.

While the author writes clearly and tried to make the biography interesting as well as moving in a good flow, I personnaly thought it dragged on and was thrilled more so when it was finished.  I would recommend this book to help you rest at night before bed, unless the views included keep you up thinking.

Before You Hit Send By Emerson Eggerichs Review

Before You Hit Send
Preventing Headache and Heartache
By Emerson Eggerichs

When will we learn?

With every sunrise we are given plenty of new examples of people “Hitting Send” and soon regretting it. Social media means what it says: it is social! Our methods of communication today allow for something to potentially be broadcast to everyone from Pekin, Illinois to Peking, China. But it’s not only Twitter fanatics who can find themselves in trouble. Every single one of us is capable of falling prey to this growing plague.

Every day we have the potential of both verbal and written blunders. It makes no difference if we are talking to a stranger over a meat counter, chatting on a cell phone with our mother, or sending an e-mail to a coworker; we can and do miscommunicate and people can and do get the wrong idea. When we don't pause long enough to think before speaking or writing, it commonly yields a misunderstanding and leads to a clash. We end up being the person who said, “You know that sphere of the brain that stops you from saying something that you shouldn't? Well, I don’t have one of those.”

This book is about preventing that misunderstanding and allowing for understanding. Said another way, preempting people from getting the wrong idea and enabling them to get the right idea! We all need work in this area in far more ways than just glancing through a checklist.

From external examples to internal turmoil, Before You Hit Send is about the four things we must think through before communicating. In all things we wish to say or write, we would be wise to ask ourselves,

Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?
Is it clear?

When we ask and answer these four questions honestly, we will be thinking wisely before we speak. But to explore this fully, we need to find out a whole lot more about ourselves and uncover why we consciously and subconsciously get into these communication disasters to begin with.  You may be surprised what you discover about yourself.  Shall we begin?

Cassandra's review- I am so guilty of doing this because I tend to be in a huge rush and need to get things done, well at least with this book I can better relate and find ways to fix my errors, because let's face it, not everyone is perfect.

I also know that emails are so impersonal that you can write something and mean to say it so many different ways, with this book it is really going to be pointed out.  Plus not everyone is going to get your talking style over the internet, so taking a few extra minutes to really grasp and respond makes all the difference.

Benji And The 24 Pound Banana Squash By Alan C. Fox Review

Have you ever wanted to achieve something so much that you were willing to dedicate yourself to a project for months on end?

That’s what Benji does in BENJI AND THE 24 POUND BANANA SQUASH (Clavis Publishing; October 2017) by bestselling author Alan C. Fox with illustrations by Eefje Kuijl.

This garden-to-table story teaches children about patience, love, and perseverance.

It all begins when Benji plants squash seeds he saved from the summer before in the back of the garden.  He carefully waters them, but for awhile, nothing happens. Then suddenly one day, tiny sprouts start pushing through the soil and Benji begins to see his hard work pay off.

When the gigantic banana squash is ready to be harvested, Benji’s dad weighs the vegetable – twenty-four pounds! – and takes a picture of Benji with it. But the best part comes when Benji’s mom cooks the squash with butter and brown sugar, so everyone in the family can gather and enjoy a delicious feast.

BENJI AND THE 24 POUND BANANA SQUASH is based on a real-life event that happened when Alan Fox was eight.  “I wanted to share the joy I experienced when I grew – what I thought was – the world’s biggest banana squash,” he explains. “I hope this book will inspire children and show them the value of patience and perseverance as well as the pleasures of growing their own fruits and vegetables to share with family and friends.”

Cassandra's Review-  The bright illustrations make this very well written book come to life.   The story is perfect for your little ones, especially if you are starting a garden.  I know that with my own family, when the seeds get planted the waiting can be slow going and sometimes not super fun, but when it is time to harvest the end result is so worth it!
