Sebastian Grey always thought he was a fairly normal teenager – good friends, decent grades, and a pretty sweet job in his foster brother’s tattoo shop. But when Romany gypsies arrive in town, Sebastian discovers his world is not what it seems.

There is an age-old feud between his family and the gypsies – and this isn’t the only secret his brother has been keeping from him. His life is not his own. The girl he’s been dreaming about has just turned up at school, and he feels compelled to protect her at all costs. Even if that means life might never be normal again.

AUTHOR Interview

Can you tell us about your book, GREY, in 30 words or less?

A YA urban fantasy series about a secretive clan of Gypsies who pull 18-year-old Sebastian into a world of secrets, tales of gargoyles, and a destiny he cannot escape.

What was your favorite scene to write?

I can’t really tell you my favorite scene to write in Grey because it would contain way too many spoilers. I can tell you that my main character Sebastian has some really weird things happening to him during the course of the story, and I definitely enjoyed writing any scene where something new happened to him. It was also a blast writing those moments from his point of view.

What was the hardest scene to edit out?

There was a scene I particularly enjoyed in the original draft where Sebastian had to face his friends and try and explain what had happened to him over the last few weeks. It was an emotional and difficult scene that showed the intense ramifications of his choices. In the end, the scene wasn’t critical to the plot and was dumped, but it was a gutting scene to tackle.

When will the next book in this series by releasing?

Shadow is the second book in “The Romany Outcasts Series”, and it is scheduled for release on the 2nd of June.

How many books will be in this series?

There are three books planned in the series, though I’m working through ideas for an additional novella and hoping my publisher will pick it up.

Are you currently working on anything else?

I have another YA urban fantasy that I’ve completed and am revising. And I have a NA novel in the works that’s a bit of light sci-fi, and I’m really having fun writing it at the moment.

What is in your TBR pile?

A friend of mine has encouraged me to read the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, so I really have to tackle those. I also have several books in my TBR pile from fellow HarperVoyager authors that I’m planning on reading, such as Supervision by Alison Stine. I also have Graceling by Kristin Cashore, several Doctor Who novels with the Twelfth Doctor, and Wonder by R.J. Palacio in my queue.

What is the best book you’ve read recently?

Oh, goodness! That’s a difficult question to answer. I certainly enjoyed the fantasy novel Darkhaven by A.F.E. Smith. She’s another one of my fellow debut authors with HarperVoyager. I recently read Wither by Lauren DeStefano and though it was a great read. Unfortunately, my reading time has suffered a bit while writing!
